The Popularity of Canadian Beer & Its Impact on The Economy

What do you do when you want to get tipsy after a hectic day’s work? Down a peg

or two of your favourite drink? Well, if you happen to be a Canadian the chances of

you choosing beer over others can be pretty high, for the beverage happens to be the

most popular one in the country – a whopping 57% compared to the second best

42% for wine as of May 2015 With such an overwhelming majority choosing beer as

its favourite drink in Canada, let us know about the drink, its history and impact on

the economy.

The History

Arguably one of the oldest beverages produced by man through fermenting cereals

like malt or barley with yeast, beer finds mention in ancient Iranian, Mesopotamian,

Chinese and Sumerian texts dating back to thousands of years. The drink was

brought into canada by the early european

they started cultivating cereals like maize and barley. If history is to be believed then

the French couple Mr. & Mrs. Hébert happened to be the first documented brewers

in Canada circa 1617 although the couple did it for their private consumption only.

However, it was only in 1668 in the city of Quebec that a commercial brewery was

built.

Impact on the Economy

That beer is a favourite with Canadians has been proved once again by the

whopping sales reported in the year 2017. As per the country’s statistics report,

Canadians had spent a total of $9.2 billion, an increase of 3.5 percent when

compared to the consumption recorded in the previous year. Furthermore, the sale

of beer has a significant impact on the economy with one out of every hundred jobs

being sustained by it (Ref: The Conference Board of Canada (CBC)). According to

the   CBC   report,  beer   sales  alone   account  for   $6   billion   in  revenue   for  the

government. No wonder, beer has become a cash cow for the Canadian government.

Beer Influencing the Dictionary?

The popularity of beer among all sections of the Canadian society notwithstanding,

there are people who suffer from a drink related phobia. Surprised? Well, the

phobia called ‘Cenosillicaphobia’ is experienced by drinkers and is related to seeing

a glass ‘empty.’

Easy Availability

You can enjoy your favourite drink in any of the pubs or restaurants that are lined

up across the country. And with the advent of the internet, you can order the same

from the comfort of your home as well. Yes, no need to move out of your house but

clicking a few buttons on your smartphone or desktop and the beer will be there at

your doorstep. The easy payment method and reasonable rates have made online

Calgary beer delivery a hit with connoisseurs. And there is an added advantage of

not waiting for long as the chosen beer gets delivered within an hour.

Other Benefits of Going Online

You can order the choicest of beer (Ale, Abbey, American Ale, Bitter Ale, Brown Ale,

Barley Wine, India Pale Ale (IPA), Irish Red Ale, Porter, Stout and many others)

come winter, rain or summer as per your requirement.

Conclusion

Canadian beer has a history of its own and contributes significantly to the country’s

economy as well. Its easy availability, especially through online means, has made it
