  2. Agenda • Enhancements made to Graduate Guidelines since March: • Registration requirement for Grad Assistants • Effective Dates & Insurance Eligibility • Reminders • Questions

Registration • Students with an assistantship appointment must be registered PRIOR TO August 30th, the first day of classes • Returning students will be charged late fee as of Aug 30th • Graduate Newsletter will include a reminder to register • Graduate School and Graduate Awards will be monitoring registration with reports • Payroll will be monitoring grad students with assistantships

Effective Dates & Insurance Eligibility • Assistantship appointments made prior to September 1st will use the standard effective date, August 16th. • NEW assistantships offered September 1st or later should use an effective date equal to the start of employment • Students are eligible to enroll for insurance within 31 days of the effective date • Late appointments can be made through the fall semester, within reason, and still qualify as an assistantship with insurance • Students are benefits-eligible as of the effective date • Late Appointment Letters: change effective date,# of payments and pro-rate salary

Effective Dates & Insurance Eligibility - Continued - • Late spring appointments should follow the same rules for fall effective dates, but student may need to pay additional premium toward health insurance in the spring • Appointments become late after first day of classes • Contact HR for questions about insurance costs • Tax consequences for students not registered • Students must be registered for exemption from FICA tax • Student must have a signed acceptance letter on file with Graduate Awards

Other Reminders……. • IJAN’S should agree with position description on recommendation form • Full time grad assistants cannot hold a second appointment • Full time status: • Registered for 9 credit hours each, fall or spring (6 credit hours in a given summer session) in an approved program of study, OR, • Appointment as a grad assistant or fellow AND registered (no minimum # of credits required) OR • Departmental certification AND registered • If student has completed all required coursework  GRD 998

  7. Fall 2010 - Important Dates • August 20 • August 30 • September 7 • September 8 • October 1 • October 29 • Mid-December • First transfer of graduate aid for fall bill • First day of classes • Late registration/Add deadline – last day • Non-attender’s process runs (students will be discontinued; grad awards will be cancelled for non-registered students) • Final fall enrollment count – graduate aid must be on system for Budget Office; fall bills produced • Fall bills due – October 29th • Final transfer of fall aid & adjustments for graduate students
