Disproportionate Minority Contact (DMC) School Curriculum

DESCRIPTION

This program, led by Melissa Shetrom, addresses the disproportionate representation of minority youth in the juvenile justice system, as mandated by the JJDPA. The initiative focuses on educating middle school students, particularly those in 7th and 8th grades, about their rights and responsibilities. The curriculum was piloted in Downey in 2009 and consists of 10 lessons aimed at understanding the juvenile justice process. Data show significant racial disparities in arrest rates within Dauphin County and Pennsylvania. Join us in this crucial effort to reduce juvenile arrests among minorities.

DMC Stats for Dauphin County and Pennsylvania County • 24.9% African American • RRI at arrest in 2008 was 2.73* • 8.1% Hispanic/Latino • 2.7% Asian • 63.8% Caucasian State14.1% African American • RRI at arrest in 2008 was 3.70* • 6.6% Hispanic/Latino • 2.4% Asian • 76.5% Caucasian *Indicates that the relative volume of arrests involving all minority youth in Dauphin County was 2.73 and 3.7 (statewide) times as high as for white youth.
