  5. 6-weekintensive undergraduate research experience on policy issues involving critical resources in northwestern China • International collaborative program involving 2 Chinese institutions (Shaanxi Normal University and Northwestern University) • Multidisciplinary approach • Builds upon CWU’sprior experience with undergraduate research in China • Program involves 12 undergraduatesand 2 graduate students per year for 3 years (4 CWU; 8 non-CWU) PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Dates: June 21—August 1, 2010 (Six weeks) • Twelve students will be divided into four multi-disciplinary teams working with a CWU mentor and equal number of Chinese researchers. • Week 1: Pre-departure program in Ellensburg: lectures, paper proposals, grant-writing, ethics in science. • Weeks 2-4: Research in China. Travel first to SNNU for prep work and integrate with Chinese teams. Research in western Shaanxi and eastern Gansu provinces. 2010 Program

  7. Weeks 5-6: Return to Ellensburg and write research papers with group mentor. • Post-program: Presentation at national and regional research conferences, paper publication. 2010 Continued

  8. CWU/NSF provides funding for travel costs to/from China and a $2000 stipend for participation. • Participants are responsible for costs of passport, visa, travel to/from Ellensburg, and personal items in China. • 24/7 support from mentors, graduate assistants, and Office of International Studies and Programs Staff.   9. Each applicant will assemble and submit by mail a complete application packet that includes the following: 1. Completed application form that can be downloaded at http://www.cwu.edu/~studyabroad/faculty-led.html 2. 750-word essay that describes your interest in the program, what you would contribute to the group effort, and how this experience would benefit you in your planned career; 3. Two academic letters of reference (a third may be added to document abilities in Mandarin); 4. An official copy of your college transcript. Complete application packets should be postmarked by February 15, 2010 Application Process
