  1. Circulatory System

  2. Functions • Transport (carry) nutrients to all parts of the body • Transports oxygen and carbon dioxide to and from the lungs • Pick up waste products and take to kidneys • Help fight infections

  3. Major Organ Heart • causes blood to flow through the body by its pumping action • Cardiac muscles provide the force needed to for the heart to beat

  4. Sequence of Blood Flow in the body Heart veins arteries capillaries

  5. Blood Vessels (organs) Arteries • Carries blood away from the heart • Carries oxygen and nutrients to all parts of the body • Oxygen rich blood • Thickest blood vessel

  6. Blood Vessels Capillaries • Smallest blood vessel • Where nutrients and wastes are exchanged between the blood and the cell • Oxygen/nutrients are dropped off, and carbon dioxide/waste are picked up • Uses the process of diffusion

  7. Blood Vessels Veins • Carries blood to the heart • Carries waste products from all parts of the body • Oxygen-poor blood • Valves keep blood moving to the heart

  8. Blood • Red blood cells – carry oxygen and carbon dioxide • White blood cells – fight infections • Platelets – help the body to clot after injury • Plasma – liquid part of blood, mostly water

  9. How does the circulatory system work with other systems? • Works with the excretory system to carry wastes to the kidneys • Works with the digestive system to pick up nutrients from food (small intestine) • Works with the respiratory system to pick up oxygen and drop off carbon dioxide • Skeletal system produces red blood cells

  10. AIDS • Infectious Disease • Caused by a virus • Virus attacks and kills white blood cells • Patients with AIDS are unable to fight off future infectious and often dies from illnesses that are easy to cure (colds, flue, pneumonia)
