HIGHER EDUCATION PROGRAM • Founded in 1968, Appalachian’s Higher Education Program provides • a pathway to professional employment, advancement, and • leadership in a wide variety of careers in community colleges, universities, college transition programs, and community agencies. • Three concentrations are offered: • Community College and University Leadership • Adult and Developmental Education • (College) Teaching • http://les.appstate.edu/programs/higher-education

  3. OFF-CAMPUS COHORT STRUCTURE • 15 students form a cohort and take all coursework together • 12 courses (36 semester hours) • 2 courses/per semester, including summer terms, at a designated site • Courses are carefully planned for the cohort and delivered only one time

MASTER OF ARTS (M.A.) IN HIGHER EDUCATION Concentration: Adult and Developmental Education • Off-campus only (Wilkes, Fall 2012) • Prepares individuals for professional roles in developmental education, learning assistance, ESL, basic skills, literacy programs, and adult education programs in a variety of settings. Graduates are prepared to be: • basic skills/developmental education instructors • faculty in vocational/instructional programs • ESOL instructors • learning specialists • tutorial coordinators • professional developers/trainers • program directors or coordinators • leaders in adult and developmental education

Wilkes M.A. Cohort (Fall 2012) Concentration: Adult and Developmental Education • Fall 2012-Summer 2014 (2 courses/per term, including summer) • Course 1: Meets one weeknight (Wednesday) each week of the term • Course 2: Meets up to 5 weekend sessions each term • Hybrid courses will meet fewer F2F sessions. • Online courses will have no more than one F2F session.

  6. ED.S. IN HIGHER EDUCATION • Provides individuals who have earned a Master’s degree an opportunity to: • Advance their careers in higher education • Develop as leaders in the field • Prepare for a doctoral program

  7. Proposed Gaston Ed.S. Cohort (Summer 2013) Concentration: Adult and Developmental Education • Summer 2013 – Fall 2014 (2 courses/per term, including summer) • Course 1: Meets one weeknight each week of the term • Course 2: Meets up to 5 weekend sessions each term • Hybrid courses will meet fewer F2F sessions. • Online courses will have no more than one F2F session.

  8. ADMISSION CRITERIA • Graduate School Minimum Criteria • 3.0 GPA in the last earned degree and official scores from the appropriate admission test(s) • OR • 2.5 GPA in the last earned degree and official scores at the 25th percentile level from the appropriate admission test(s).

COSTS • Off-Campus Tuition & Fees - 2011-12 Academic Year: • $198.00 per semester hour - in-state student • ($594.00 per three-hour class) • $1,188 for 6 semester hours Federal financial aid does not provide scholarships; however, loans are available. Students must meet minimum credit-hour enrollment to be eligible. Program and departmental scholarships are available. PAYMENT PLAN OPTION • The TuitionPay Monthly Payment Plan is an interest-free alternative to paying your college expenses. • http://www.studentaccounts.appstate.edu/payment-plan • You may break up your college expenses into either four or five equal monthly payments for one term or nine or ten equal monthly payments for both terms (fall and spring). • Not available for summer sessions

  12. APPLICATION DEADLINE • July 1, 2012 • Application must be “successfully submitted” (completed) online with application fee paid and supplemental materials received or postmarked by this deadline. • Target: June 1, 2012 • (completed applications must be on file by this date • to be considered for scholarships)
