Regional Sediment Management Is… The integrated management of littoral, estuarine, and riverine sediments to achieve balanced and sustainable solutions to sediment related needs.” Regional sediment management recognizes sediment as a resource. Sediment processes are important components of coastal and riverine systems that are integral to environmental and economic vitality.

LONG TERM MANAGEMENT STRATEGY FOR THE PLACEMENT OF DREGED SEDIMENT IN THE BAY AREA Adopted 2001 • LTMS Goals • Maintain in an environmentally & economically sound manner channels necessary for safe navigation & eliminate unnecessary dredging • Conduct disposal in the most environmentally sound manner • Maximize reuse of dredged material • Establish cooperative permitting framework

  4. LTMS: Current Management Program • Is a Regional Sediment Management Strategy • Focused solely on navigational dredging • Developed in the 1990’s • In a sediment rich environment • Absence of concern for climate change

  9. Management Questions Do we understand the system well enough to manage it appropriately? What are the existing data gaps? Can sediment stored in watersheds be moved to appropriate locations? Can we improve watershed health while providing sediment to marshes? Can marshes keep up with sea level rise? Can we feed mudflats with sediment? Are we moving to a “more normal” system?
