  3. OBJECTIVE(S) ADVANCED INTERNATIONAL COURSE IN LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT IN URBAN AREAS 2010 AFRICA

  4. Outputs • The tangible products or services provided in a project – the tangible evidence of the objective. • Outputs should be SMART • You can only know if you have a SMART output if you can measure it somehow. • Outputs are usually the easiest thing to conceive of – but not always! • Outputs must be logically linked to the objectives – they are not done for their own sake! ADVANCED INTERNATIONAL COURSE IN LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT IN URBAN AREAS 2010 AFRICA

  5. Activities The tasks that must be completed in order to produce each of the project’s outputs. List as much as possible in chronological order. ADVANCED INTERNATIONAL COURSE IN LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT IN URBAN AREAS 2010 AFRICA

  6. Describe Activities For each output: • List activities in chronological order in the matrix, output by output – use numbering to match activities with outputs; • Work with both matrix and Gantt diagram/ work schedule; • Describe/explain the activity in text document (relate especially to approach & methodology). 7. Gantt Chart Shows in bar chart form the activities & time frames of a project. • Can show links between activities with arrows. • Can be linked to manpower, to assess needs, timing & costs ADVANCED INTERNATIONAL COURSE IN LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT IN URBAN AREAS 2010 AFRICA

  8. Activities & Personnel A Typical Combined Schedule Time Distribution of personnel inputs ADVANCED INTERNATIONAL COURSE IN LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT IN URBAN AREAS 2010 AFRICA

  9. A common structure in the text: … The project objective is ……<probably with an explanation> The outputs and activities to achieve the objective are as follows: • Output 1….. 1.1 Activity 1 ….. 1.2 Activity 2 …. 2. Output 2 2.1 Activity 1…. 2.2 Activity 2 … Describe the Outputs clearly, in quantitative form if possible, & where appropriate show targets and target dates. Link to objective(s) • There may be enough detail here to give an idea of the kinds and amounts of inputs, but usually there is no list or specific budget amount mentioned here. What is important is to mention WHO will do what, and if appropriate where and when. Reference should be made to the Gantt diagram. 10. Matrix: Input x Indicators Cell Critical cell: list all inputs - personnel, budget, in-kind contributions, as well as responsible agents for each. Link to budget, personnel list, Gantt diagram etc. FOR NEXT WEEK… ADVANCED INTERNATIONAL COURSE IN LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT IN URBAN AREAS 2010 AFRICA
