  1. Program Integrity Final Rule Return of Title IV Funds (R2T4) - Taking Attendance

Required to Take Attendance • A school is considered to be “required to take attendance” if: • Outside agency requires the school to take attendance • School requires its instructors to take attendance • School or outside agency has a requirement that can only be met by taking attendance or comparable process §668.22(b)(3)(i)

  3. Required to Take Attendance If a school requires attendance to be taken only for some students, it must use its attendance records to determine a withdrawal date for those students §668.22(b)(3)(ii)

  4. Required to Take Attendance • If a school requires attendance to be taken only for a limited period, it must use its attendance records to determine a withdrawal date during the period. • If a student withdraws after that period, the school determines a withdrawal date based on rules for schools not required to take attendance. §668.22(b)(3)(iii)

  5. Withdrawal Date • If a school is required to take attendance or requires that attendance be taken only for a single day, it is not considered to be “required to take attendance.” • For classes meeting on alternate days, attendance may be taken once per class day without the school being considered to be “required to take attendance.” §668.22(b)(3)(iv)

  6. Attendance at an Academically-Related Activity • Attendance at an academically-related activity no longer includes: • Counseling, or • Academic advisement §§668.22(c)(3) and (l)(7)(i)
