  3. Multimedia • Is the integration of text, graphics, sound, video and animation into a single document. • This document can be a letter, brochure, newsletter, web page, presentation or movie

  5. It is not necessary for the document to contain all forms of media in order to be considered multimedia. • Two or more media elements make a document multimedia

  6. Image Management • Applies to the use of graphics in documents. • The size of the files, the number of files, the type of colors used are part of the image management

  7. Graphics • Everything on a page that is not TEXT.

  8. Multimedia and image management • Together they communicate a message, and the success of a business often depends on the effectiveness of this message.

  9. Desktop Publishing History • 1961 – IBM Selectric typewriter with Golfball head • Allowed the user for the first time to change the font and size on the same page. • 10 cpi – pica to 12 cpi - elite • Adding graphics required scissors and glue.

  10. 1984 • Apple Macintosh and Image Writer printer allowed for varying font sizes, fonts, landscape and portrait printing. • Graphics could be digitally added to a document. • Scanning was done through the printer by replacing the cartridge.

  11. 1985 • Aldus PageMaker made it possible for desktop publishing as we know it today. • It allowed for columns and justified text.

  12. Printers • Dot Matrix – first printers • Also called impact printers • The head hit a ribbon which created a series of dots that formed letters. • In 1985, the Apple Laser Writer appeared making the text smooth • 1991 – Hewlett Packard Deskjet made color printouts affordable for the average user

  13. Graphics • Mac Paint and Mac Draw were early products • 1989 – Corel Draw • 1990 – Adobe Photoshop • These programs increased the user’s ability to fine turn artwork and to create renderings that had never been possible through paint and pen.

  14. Hardware • 1991 – Hewlett Packard Scan Jet became affordable • OCR(Optical Character Recognition) software improved. • A scanner would transfer previously typed text to a computer with enough accuracy to eliminate the need to retype it.

  15. Storage Hardware • 1995 – Iomega Zip Drive • Allowed for lots more storage. • Writeable CD ROM’s/ DVD’s

  16. Web Pages • Modems allowed computers to talk to one another. • This allowed the internet to boom. • 1992 Mosaic – the first Web Browser • 1994 Netscape came out • These browsers made it possible to manage text, graphics, and sound with ease. • HTML – Hyper Text Markup Language

  17. Power Point • 1987 it was created. • It allowed a user to create business documents that provide information in a colorful, interactive, and dramatic format. • Projectors dropped in price with the improvement of DLP. • Digital Light Processing – uses mirrors to reflect an image on a screen
