  1. WELCOME TO THE JACKSON STREET CHURCH OF CHRIST PLEASE TURN OFF CELL PHONES

  2. Ephesians 2:19-22 Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief corner stone,21 in whom the whole building, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, 22 in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.

  3. BUILDING UP THE CHURCH

  4. BUILDING UP THE CHURCH • The New Testament word "edify" refers to the act of "building a house." It refers to the promoting of spiritual growth and development. This word could be translated accurately as "strengthened" or "confirmed." • Acts 9:31 Then the churches throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria had peace and were edified. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, they were multiplied. • Col. 2:7 rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving. • Rom. 14:19 Therefore let us pursue the things which make for peace and the things by which one may edify another. • 1 Cor. 14:12 Even so you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, let it be for the edification of the church that you seek to excel.

  5. I. BIBLE KNOWLEDGE BUILDS THE CHURCH • 1 Pet. 2:1-2 Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, • Eph. 4:15 but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ. • Acts 20:32 “So now, brethren, I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.

  6. II. LOVE BUILDS THE CHURCH • 1 Cor. 13:1-8a Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. 2And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing. 4Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; 5does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; 6does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; 7bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8Love never fails.

  7. II. LOVE BUILDS THE CHURCH • 1 Cor. 8:1 Now concerning things offered to idols: We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies.  • 1 Pet. 1:22 Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart,

  8. III. UNITY BUILDS THE CHURCH • Eph. 4:1-3 I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, 2with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, 3endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. • John 17:20-21 “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; 21that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.

  9. IV. STANDING FIRM FOR TRUTH BUILDS THE CHURCH • 1 Cor. 16:13 Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong. • Jude 1:3 Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. • 2 Tim. 1:13 Hold fast the pattern of sound words which you have heard from me, in faith and love which are in Christ Jesus.

  10. V. NON-CONFORMITY BUILDS THE CHURCH • Rom. 12:1-2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. • Eph. 5:10-11 finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. 11And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. • James 1:27 Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.

  11. VI. WORK BUILDS THE CHURCH • Titus 3:1 Remind them to be subject to rulers and authorities, to obey, to be ready for every good work, • Titus 2:14 who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works. • Eph. 2:10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. • Eph. 4:16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.

  12. YOU AND BUILDING UP THE CHURCH • Are You A Part Of The Building Of God – The Church? • Are You Helping Or Hindering The Building Up Of The Church? • Are You Growing In: • Knowledge? • Love? • Unity? • Are You Standing Firm For The Truth? • Are You Unconformed To The World? • Are You Doing Your Part For The Growth Of The Church?
