  4. CALIFORNIA PERSPECTIVES • 5th largest economic power in the world – GSP over $1.3 trillion annually • Over 1 in 7 jobs in the state are tied to the movement of international trade • 16% of the nation’s exports are from California

  5. CALIFORNIA PERSPECTIVES • 1996 Freight Volume: 1.16 billion tons 76 percent was moved by trucks • 2016 Freight Volume Forecast: 1.81 billion tons (56% increase) 79 percent will be moved by trucks • Federal forecasts project a 100% increase in the western state volumes between 2000 and 2020

  7. PROGRAM GOAL California fosters the development of a balanced, integrated, seamless, multimodal goods movement transportation system that is safe, efficient, reliable and effective. It recognizes that this statewide system of highways, rail lines, airports, seaports, and border crossings is essential to a healthy economy and quality of life.

  12. CONCLUSION Global and domestic trade are the linchpins to our economy. But we must respond to the challenges of moving those goods effectively, if we are to maintain mobility and enhance our citizens, our customers, quality of life.
