  2. BACKGROUND INFORMATION • The 2002 and 2004 Maryland Cancer Survey (MCS) were population-based telephone surveys, conducted in English • Under- representation of Latinos in the 2002 and 2004 MCS • Lack of information on cancer risk factors and screening behaviors for Latinos

MONTGOMERY COUNTY LATINO CANCER SURVEY • A collaboration between the Latino Health Initiative and the University of Maryland • A total of 503 individuals surveyed, ages 40 and older • Limited to those who considered themselves Hispanic/Latino • From 3 different areas of the County representing different economic strata • Areas with at least 20%* of households reporting a Hispanic householder * Census 2000 http://www.fha.state.md.us/cancer/pdf/MCLCS_2005.pdf

SELECTED FINDINGS Access to Health Care • 58% respondents had no health insurance Comparisons with Healthy People 2010 Targets • The sample has not reachedtarget objectives for the following screening measures: • CRC screening with either FOBT (23%) or lower GI endoscopy (33%) • Mammography for breast cancer screening in the last 2 years (56%) • Pap testing for cervical cancer screening in the last 3 years (84%) • Oral cancer screening in the past year (7%)

LESSONS LEARNED Involve the community in all aspects of the research process • In a successful collaboration like ours, researchers and community partners enhance their capacity and learn • Principal Investigator or other key research staff should be bilingual and bicultural • Survey tools need to be developed in a culturally and linguistically competent manner • Recruit and train bilingual and bicultural interviewers • Consult the community to increase the accuracy and culturally sensitive interpretation of data • Engage the community for more effective dissemination of information to impact public health and policy
