CURRENT EVENTS DECEMBER 19 CALGARY LOTTO WINNER TOM CRIST TO GIVE $40M PRIZE AWAY • A Calgary man who won a $40-million lottery prize last May has kept it a secret, but says the money will go to charity in memory of his wife. • Tom Crist was golfing in Palm Springs, Calif., in May when his phone rang. • Crist said that as soon as he got the call he knew where the money was going to go. • His wife of 33 years, Jan, died in February 2012. She was 57. • Crist said cancer was a special concern, because of what happened to his wife. "She was fairly young and stuff. She beat it for six years before it finally caught up to her."

  2. CURRENT EVENTS DECEMBER 19 • Crist said he plans to put the money into a family trust fund to be doled out to charities he and his kids pick over the years. Charities such as the Canadian Cancer Society and Calgary's Tom Baker Cancer Centre will be at the top of that list • Crist plays both Lotto Max and Lotto 6/49 by subscription, meaning players can pay for their selections for up to a year at a time. Crist retired as the CEO of EECOL Electric in late September of this year. CURRENT EVENTS DECEMBER 19 NEW AUTHOR TO CONTINUE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO TALE • The Swedish publisher of the best-selling The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo trilogy said Tuesday it has hired an author to write a sequel to the series by Stieg Larsson, who died in 2004. • Norstedts said it signed a contract with David Lagercrantz, the author of I am Zlatan, a biography of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the captain of Sweden's soccer team, to write a new novel about journalist Mikael Blomqvist and hacker Lisbeth Salander that is scheduled to be published in August 2015.

CURRENT EVENTS DECEMBER 19 • Larsson's trilogy, has been a huge international success, with more than 75 million books sold in 50 countries. • The decision to continue the series had been taken after long discussions with Larsson's father and brother, Erland and Joakim Larsson, who own the rights to his work. The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo inspired a hit Swedish film trilogy and a subsequent and acclaimed English-language movie adaptation of the first book starred Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara.

CURRENT EVENTS DECEMBER 19 • Larsson's longtime partner, Eva Gabrielsson, who has been in a legal dispute with Erland and Joakim over the rights to the trilogy • Gabrielsson and Larsson were a couple for more than 30 years, but they never married. Larsson didn't leave a will, so only his brother and father inherited the rights to his works. Stieg Larsson, died of a heart attack in 2004 before any of the books in the popular Millennium Trilogy were published.

CURRENT EVENTS DECEMBER 19 NIRVANA, KISS, PETER GABRIEL TO JOIN ROCK HALL OF FAME • Nirvana, Kiss and Peter Gabriel will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next year. • The Rock Hall announced Tuesday that Hall and Oates, Linda Ronstadt and Cat Stevens also will be inducted April 10 at a ceremony at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Artists are eligible for induction 25 years after their first release. • Nirvana received a nomination in its first year of eligibility and next year the band will celebrate the 25th anniversary of its debut, Bleach. The induction comes 20 years after frontman Kurt Cobain committed suicide at age 27.

  7. CURRENT EVENTS DECEMBER 19 • This year also marked first-time nominations for Hall and Oates, Gabriel and Ronstadt. Kiss and Stevens, who have been nominated in the past, made the cut after being absent from the list for several years. • Singer/guitarist Paul Stanley, who with bassist Gene Simmons has anchored Kiss' changing lineup for 40 years, said the band never cared when critics slammed them. • The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is in Cleveland, Ohio but the annual induction ceremonies move to different venues annually. More than 700 Rock Hall voters determined the 2014 class.
