  1. Welcome to year 5!Please sign the register and help yourself to the handouts.

  2. Meet the Team

  3. Rules: • we will keep ourselves and others safe • we will treat people and property with respect • we will not interrupt the learning of others Learning for a Better Tomorrow. Values: Honesty Determination Tolerance Independence Respect Responsibility

  4. Attendance Evidence shows that pupils who have poor attendance and punctuality do not generally achieve well and have difficulties at secondary school. At Sunnymede, we have been working hard to improve overall attendance. The Dfe continues to monitor our school to make sure this continues to improve and we need parents on board in committing to keeping their child’s attendance high (ideally over 97%).

  5. Growth Mindset We are continuing to develop a culture of ‘Growth Mindset’ within the school to support and encourage the children. Each week, the children will vote for who they believe have shown a growth mindset and the winner will be awarded Neurone of the Week. The child will then have the chance to share how they have demonstrated a growth mindset outside of school. This book will be given out on Friday and should be returned the following week.

  6. Year 5 Curriculum Overview At the start of each term, there will be a year group newsletter which outlines what your children will learn. A copy of this can be found on the school website on our year group page. On this overview you will find all of the topics we will be covering. We have started the year with our history: The Vikings. It also contains dates and optional homework that could be completed.

  7. National Curriculum On the handout is extra information on the end of year expectations (these are also on the webpage).

  8. English English lessons will occur daily as well as guided reading sessions. There will also be grammar and spelling sessions. Handwriting will be taught throughout the week. When there is evidence of joining, consistent style and correct letter formation they will be given a pen licence.

  9. Reading Reading forms an integral part of our curriculum and good reading skills help children progress well. Reading daily with your child will enhance their progress greatly. It is an expectation that children read at home, and parents are expected to make comments in the reading record books. Each week, your child can change their book and explore a range of texts with their adults. They are often heard reading aloud by a teacher, LSA or a reading volunteer for those who require one to one.

  10. SPAG Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar Children need to understand the difference between written and spoken language. Using the word lists, try to encourage children to ask questions about the meaning of words and how they can be used. We will continue to test the children termly on the word lists.

  11. MATHS Please encourage your child to continue to practise their times tables (particularly instant recall). Your child can still use Times Tables Rockstarsto help them. Times tables should continue to be practised and children will be tested every Friday. Mathletics passwords will be given out. We do not set the children in maths lessons.

  12. HOMEWORK Homework continues to be an important part of learning, with the majority of the homework set being linked to consolidate or enhance learning from class. It is imperative that your child regularly completes and hands in homework. (See homework poster). If your child completes all of their homework in a term, they will be entered into a raffle.

  13. General information P.E. – 5A and 5T will have indoor P.E. on Tuesday. 5M will have indoor P.E. on a Friday. We will also have outdoor PE on Wednesday. P.E. kits need to be available all the time. We will remind children to bring their P.E. kits home every half-term! All children will be expected to take part in a daily mile, therefore the appropriate footwear should be in school every day. Water bottles – We’re happy for the children to bring water bottles into the classroom and drink from them at appropriate times. Uniform - please ensure all children follow the uniform code; letters will be sent home if uniform does not follow the school policy. Hair accessories should not be fancy.

  14. Communication Home/school communication is extremely important and there are a variety of ways to communicate with staff: 1) Homework diaries: Messages may be written in here to the teacher. Therefore, your child must tell the teacher if there is a message in his/her diary. 2) Making an appointment: If you need to speak to the teacher urgently or for a more personal issue, please make an appointment with the office staff. 3) End of the day: Teachers are available at the end of the day for brief appointments. 4) Friday drop ins: Every Friday, you are invited to come and have a look at your child’s work in the classroom. 5) Please avoid from speaking to the class teacher whilst the children are lining up as our priority is to get the children in quickly and safely. 6) Home school agreement – This will need to be signed again this year and please discuss this with your child. 7) Please ensure that you have provided two emergency contacts. If you are unsure please visit the office.

  15. Points of contact • 1st point of contact should always be your child’s class teacher (Mrs Mussenden, Miss Aston and Miss Turnbull). • If the matter is not resolved, you can speak to the year group leader (Mrs Mussenden). • Following this, the next point of contact will be the phase leader (Miss Wilcox)

  16. Lining Up and Going Home Children need to be in their lines by 8.50am when the bell rings. Children need to remember to line up in silence and in single file ready to start the day. End of the day exiting arrangements - should you wish your children to walk home or be collected by another adult - we require your written consent for this to happen.

  17. Class assemblies 5M – 18th October 5A – 25th October 5T – 15th November Classes will prepare an assembly to show you what has been learned. The assembly will start at 9am.

  18. And lastly… Should any of you like to help with improving our school library or would like to be a reading volunteer, please let the office know. Our year group page will shortly be updated with information you may find helpful to know what your children are getting up to. Medicines - It is the parents responsibility to ensure their children has an asthma pump in school. If your child requires medicine to be taken during the school day you will need to complete one of the medical forms which can be found on the website and in the office. Just a reminder there is an author visit on Wednesday 18th September.
