  2. Principles • “Researching” and “teaching” are more effective for deep learning than “studying”. • Find your own needs and capabilities.

  3. Principles 2 • Doing easy reading builds basic reading skills. • For specialized texts, an analytical approach works best.

  4. Working with words • You should learn the Longman Defining Vocabulary as quickly as possible, because it constitutes about 60-80% of a text.

  5. Working with words • You should work on the Academic Word List using the AWL Highlighter and AWL Gapmaker, because the AWL combined with the LDV gives about 90% coverage of most texts.

  6. Working with words 2 • If you don’t have much time, think about your priorities. • If you know most of the LDV words, or if they don’t seem so important, you may want to concentrate on the AWL.

  7. Working with words 3: Web Vocab Profiler • After using the AWL Highlighter and Gapmaker a few times, you should try the Web Vocab Profiler.

  9. Grammar & Phrases: Concordancing • A concordancer is a good tool for investigating the use of words within phrases and sentences.

  10. Concordancing 2 • In other words, you can study grammar and vocabulary together. • You can focus on aspects of a text that seem important to you.
