  1. Avoid the vague or generic thesis: There are many similarities and differences between A and B. A and B are alike in some ways and different in others.

  2. Avoid self-references (references to yourself or your essay). I decided to compare and contrast A and B. I will explain the similarities and differences between…. My essay will show….

  3. In your thesis, introduce the main idea(s) that you will explore in the essay. A good thesis gives direction to the essay without giving away too much content. Remember that you have been asked both to compare and contrast, so your thesis will have two sides.

  4. Here is a pattern that may work for you: Although A and B are similar in _____ and ____, they differ in _____, ____, and ____. These contrasts contribute to ________. The last bit (if relevant) would begin to answer the question “so what?”

  5. Another pattern: While A and B share the characteristics of ______, they sharply contrast in their _____ and ______, leading to ______. A and B have minor differences in ______, but they have strong similarities in _____ and _____.

  6. Examples (notice the patterns): Although Cousin Eunice and Abigail Tillerman could both provide safe homes for the children, their homes would be different, not only in appearance, but also in the methods used to raise the children. Although the film captured the emotions of the characters, some important parts of the book were omitted. The theme of the book was about the meaning of “home,” but it was hard to find this theme in the movie because of all the omissions.

  7. The trials of the Scottsboro boys and Tom Robinson differed in setting, lawyers, and victims; however, both cases were plagued by racism and bigotry. Both trials had the same basic charges and verdict. However, these court cases differed in the logistics of the trials, the exact charges, and the societal repercussions of the cases. The book and the movie versions of To Kill a Mockingbird have similarities in their general themes and plots; however, they also have differences like the omission of minor characters and specific scenes from the movie.
