Setting in the fantasy genre often helps us distinguish the fantasy world from the real world. • Write a paragraph in your journal that tells how the people in The Power of Six’s world differ from the students’ world. How does this affect the character? The plot? The themes? Why is setting so important?

During this time, Adelina seems to have lost her belief in Lorien and the mission that she and Marina face. • Discussion: Debate this statement: Just because someone believes something does not mean it is true.

  10. Description • Description brings the world in a novel to life, giving the reader a sense of location and time. It grounds the characters into the pretend world of the novel. • With a partner write a short description of The Power Of Six and whether you feel it is effective. Come up with a picture of what you think the character(s) looks like and what the setting looks like from the description.

  22. Legacies • Legacy. Six's first legacy reveals itself and she is able to use invisibility to escape her cell. Marina knows that they were supposed to separate until their Legacies developed, but for how long? The objective of this lesson is to look at the concept of legacy.

  28. Think About • 4. Whenever reading a science fiction or fantasy novel, one must become familiar with new terminology that explains concepts or technology that is not a part of the "real" world. In the case of "The Power of Six", much of the setting is familiar to the reader, though there are new ideas and terms to learn. Discuss the following:1. Find five terms that are a part of The Power of Six's world that occur in the "real" world but are used differently in "The Power of Six"'s world. Define the words as used in the world of "The Power of Six" and compare those five words as to how they are currently used in the American English language. 2. There are ways of learning about a new world or time when reading a science fiction or fantasy novel. Discuss the ways you were able to understand the world of The Power of Six. Did you have to look up any words? What does it mean to learn a word through its context? Do you have to do that in "The Power of Six"? What word(s)? 4. Were there any words you never really understood from "The Power of Six"? Which ones? How can you learn the meaning of those words?

Which do you like more? Why? Which one seems more of a well-rounded character?3.   46. Forshadowing • 13. 1. What is foreshadowing? How many incidences of foreshadowing are in "The Power of Six"? How does foreshadowing contribute to a book's suspense?2. Discuss an example of foreshadow in "The Power of Six" including why you believe it is foreshadowing. Include examples from the book and your own life to illustrate your answer.3. How do you think most people react to uncertainty in their lives? Use examples from "The Power of Six" and your own live to support your opinion.

  47. Reflection • 8. There are a number of interesting questions raised by "The Power of Six". Questions that Lore most likely want readers to consider and think through carefully. Discuss the following:1. What does the term "author agenda" mean? 2. Name one idea/concept you think may have been a part of the Lore's agenda. Analyze that idea throughout the book and discuss Lore's probable agenda concerning that idea.2. Do you think writers who have an agenda for writing should point it out in a preface?3. How often do you think fiction is written with a clear agenda in mind by the author?4. Research the life of Lore and see if/where his life may have influenced his writing.

  48. Novel Discussion • Discuss the following:1. What do you think are the characteristics of a successful novel?2. Analyze and discuss "The Power of Six" based upon the criteria you decide upon in #1 and judge if it is a successful novel.3. Do you think the criteria for a successful novel should be different if it is written for adults versus young adults? Why or why not? Would most adults consider "The Power of Six" a successful novel? What about young teens?

  49. Imagery • Imagery in literature. Imagery is the picture we form in our minds of the story we read. It can involve, visual, auditory, olfactory, gustatory, tactile, and kinetic (general motion), and kinesthetic (motion of animals and people). The author uses these imagery to translate words into a visual story that we can see and participate in within our minds. The objective of this lesson is to look at imagery in literature. • 1) 1. Class discussion. What is visual, auditory, olfactory, gustatory, tactile and motion imagery? How does Lore use these tools to create a world that contains "unreal" events, objects, or beings? How is the imagery used so the reader will accept the story as real?

  50. Dialogue • 1) 1. Class discussion. Introduce dialogue to the students and how writers use it in books. Ask the students to choose a character from The Power of Six and isolate the character's dialogue. They should look at the dialogue and see what it says about that character. How does the character speak? What does the character say? How does Lore use dialogue in this book? Is the dialogue realistic? Do the students think the dialogue is more about style then characterization? Do they think almost every word a person speaks is designed to have an effect on the story? How would dialogue be different in a play as opposed to a novel?
