  1. Publications Subcommittee Reports 16 January 2014 National Harbor, MD

  2. Awards • Planning and Review • Book Series • Journals • Ethical Standards

  3. Planning and Review • Old Business: • We would like some guidance on future journal or book series review whether our committee will handle them. • We encourage that AIAA defer discussions of a Journal for Systems Engineering until there is critical mass in the community.  We recommend the formation of a Systems Engineering Blog lead by members in the community. We also recommend that AIAA hosts a site that provides AIAA members with best practices related to Systems Engineering Practice.

  4. Planning and Review (cont.) • New Business: • We will form a committee to look at how AIAA can leverage the emergence of MOOCs as an approach to expose AIAA membership and beyond to aeronautics and astronautics. These could be in the form of a series of short courses or fundamental subjects that could be widely marketed to various audiences.  There is potential for possible partnerships with academic institutions to leverage faculty talent and visibility in the field. It could also be used as a tool for k-12 STEM outreach. • We also recommend AIAA consider a system that would acknowledge recipients and winners of  • AIAA Fellow status • Best Paper Awards • This can be done by sending out electronic emails to supervisors and others designated by the individual during the application or nomination process. This makes others aware and builds interest and prestige in AIAA and its programs.

  5. Planning and Review (cont.) • The PPRC will review data related to launching a Journal on Autonomy. Is there critical mass and where does the current community publish.   • Finally, AIAA should implement Crossmark concept to annotate papers that  might have been removed from the system for ethics violations like plagiarism.

  6. Books • Education • Seek appropriate book/author(s) to experiment with Kindle edition of Education series textbook. • Develop reward system for submission of errata that can be posted to ARC in support of individual titles. Possibly a free ebook from a select list in exchange for submission of accurate corrections. • Seek an education/learning expert to speak to the EAB about the future of books, learning materials, and methods. • Progress • Seek resolution of issues surrounding AIAA vs. government interpretation of volume editor contract when government employees are involved. AIAA prefers a broadly applicable solution • Continue significant efforts already underway by EIC and EAB to rejuvenate the book pipeline. Increase in titles published expected in FY14 and beyond.

  7. Books (cont.) • Library of Flight • Explore opportunities for collaboration (corporate, academic) in regard to both future publications on general projects and possibly addressing the “STEM problem.” • All Series • Very pleased with work of UK/Europe acquisitions consultant in recruiting new titles. Seek additional methods of pursuing acquisitions outreach in U.S. and other countries.

  8. Journals • Review the implications of increasing the publication frequency of JGCD from bimonthly to monthly. • Create a policy statement on how AIAA views Impact Factor. • Implement CrossCheck software process to scan articles for possible plagiarism. • Continue to improve journal statistics and compare competitors’ time to publication. • Find ways to elevate the discussion about the lack of industry papers in the journals to top levels so that the culture of not submitting articles can be changed.
