Coop Appreciation Breakfast Collingwood Collegiate Institute May 23, 2003
As a community we wish to thank Bob Pommer for his years of dedication and leadership in the Cooperative Education program at Collingwood Collegiate Institute.
The son of the local baker in Linwood, Ontario, Bob developed a love for life in a small, supportive community
Settling in Stayner and then later in Nottawa with Elaine and their two boys, Eric and Craig, Bob joined the teaching staff at Collingwood Collegiate Institute.
Affectionately called “Beaker” by fellow Science teachers, he could often be found concocting chemical potions in between Gleaner sales.
For the fireside chats… …by always providing support to staff and students.
For your positive outlook… …with your warm smile and enthusiasm.
For allowing us to visualize… …what a good cup of coffee really looks like.
For your mentoring… …and teaching us how to “fly”.
For your badminton finesse… …and putting up with conversations regarding “real sports”.
For the Power to the Tower… …by joining CCI students cycling to the newly built CN Tower to raise money for the United Way.
For the ability to “multi-task”… …and not get distracted.
For your avian interests… …and providing us with far too much information about pigeons.
For assisting us … ..in understanding the components of a good “solution”.
For taking the classroom out into the community… …and coaching students to set and work towards their goals.
For assisting students at placement… …and providing us with a “Kodak moment”.
…you were one of those teachers that you couldn’t help get along with. You understood everything that we were going through and helped out as much as possible in every situation. You were an incredible mentor for me through my years at CCI. Krysta Burrow
As a student as CCI, my first impression of Mr. Pommer was an energetic individual, whose love for his job was evident in the effort he put forth for his students. It was this level of effort that allowed me to hold a Coop position at the Collingwood airport. For many, it would seem a placement at a small, local airport would be less than exciting. However, Mr. Pommer’s persistence to make such a placement as educational as possible resulted in one of the best experiences of life during high school…
…this introduction to the world of aviation has stayed with me, and I now hold a position as an Aerospace Weapons Director within North American Aerospace Defense Operations(NORAD) and as an officer of the Canadian Armed Forces. The efforts of Mr. Pommer have led to the success of many, including myself.
Thank you Mr. Pommer, Lt. Christopher J. Horner Weapons Director 21 Aerospace Control and Warning Squadron
Bob Pommer helped me set up a coop position with Sensor Technology, a hi-tech ceramic manufacturing and research company. This coop was my first introduction to scientific research-something I have been interested in since childhood. My positive coop experience encouraged me to continue to study science and aim for a career in research. I am presently doing HIV research in Ottawa. Thank you Mr. Pommer for supporting my investigative spirit! Rachel Sutton
Coop was an overall good experience for me as I learned how to deal with the real world of having a boss in a career setting, examining issues, dealing with the general public and the running of a travel business. While I discovered a career in travel was not for me, it was so important to have the opportunity to explore “life”. You never know where you’ll end up – I used coop as a learning experience and as a “free chance” to see what the world of work offers. Thank you Mr. Pommer! Rebecca Hare (Journalism Student)
I first met Mr. Pommer in grade 12 chemistry class. He created an atmosphere of caring and mutual respect in his classroom. These values were as important as any chemistry lesson. Participation was the key and every answer was readily accepted and integrated into the lesson of the day. He challenged each student to strive for their very best. When I graduated from CCI, teaching was definitely one of the options I considered…
…Five years later I returned to CCI as a new graduate from Teacher’s College, armed with a host of innovative ideas and theory, but lacking the experience to know what really worked in the classroom. Mr. Pommer became a willing mentor and I discovered how caring and compassionate he was as he coached me through that first year of teaching. Teaching with Mr. Pommer has been a wonderful experience, he has been a dedicated member of the profession who always kept the needs of students as his first priority. Thank you for your years of service. Kathy Lemon, CCI Science
