Historical Perspective • A National Indicators Programme (NIP) came into effect in 1997 • National Steering Committee on Indicators of Sustainable Development assembled under the aegis of the National Commission on Sustainable Development • Assessment forms created and identification of national indicators commenced(1999)

  4. Historical Perspective • National multi-sectoral consultation held to finalize list • List finalized-170 indicators of sustainable development for Barbados (2000) • Pilot study carried out to test sub-set of 20 indicators (2000)

Indicators • 170 indicators identified currently classified into 3 areas: Human Well-being, Ecological Welfare and Sustainable Interactions • 12 Sub-themes: health, education housing, social welfare, security, air, land-use, water, population, economic development, consumption and production patterns

  6. Indicators • Tourism • Tourist population as a percentage of total population(average, maximum and minimum) • Disaster Management • Economic loss due to disasters • Human loss due to disasters • Financial loss due to disasters

  7. Indicators • Climate Change • Emissions of greenhouse gases (CO2 etc.) • Sea level rise • Emission of CO2 per capita • Changes in sea water temperature

Indicators • Coastal Zone Management • Catch per Unit effort /annual marine catch • Signs of overexploitation-changing composition of landings by species • Signs of overexploitation-changing composition of landings- decreasing size of individuals • Seagrass beds • Terrestrial and marine water quality • Coral reef health

  9. Indicators • Coastal Zone Management • Mangroves • Coastal geomorphology • Algae index • Bacterial index • Fish kill events • Discharges in coastal water e.g. oil, ballast water etc. • Release of nitrogen and phosphorus into coastal waters

  10. Indicators • Coastal Zone Management • Measured levels of marine pollution • Increase in physical development in coastal areas • User growth in coastal areas

  11. Indicators • Land-Use Planning • Barbadian Context has developed indicators under the following areas: • agriculture • Land degradation • Biodiversity • Natural Capital • CZM • Water • Waste

  12. Challenges • Lack of human , technical and financial resources • National Importance • Lack of awareness/ attitudes towards information use • Formats, frequency, accuracy • Continuity

  13. Successes • Partnerships • Regional publications on environmental statistic • EVI • State of the Environment Reporting • Increasing awareness among technocrats

  14. Way Forward • Improvement on partnerships-e.g. tourism • Piggy-back (where possible) • State of the Environment Reports • National Policy on Sustainable Development
