The Big Bang Theory: A Unique Perspective on Geek Culture and Comedy

"The Big Bang Theory," created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, first aired on September 27, 2007, in the US. The sitcom explores the lives of four socially awkward geeks in Pasadena, California, blending science and humor to captivating effect. Our research, including a survey of students, showed universal appreciation for the show, particularly for the character Sheldon Cooper. Despite declining viewership since 2011, the show originally targeted a male audience but shifted to embrace wider demographics by diversifying its cast.

  1. The Big Bang theory The Big Bang Theory first aired on the September 27th 2007 (US) and 14th February 2008 (UK), the show was created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady. The show is a comedy sit-com about four geeks living their life’s in Pasadena, California. The reason for us choosing The Big Bang Theory is because we are both fond of the show it was also different from what everyone else choose.

  2. Primary Research • We did a survey to find out if they are; male or female, their age, if they liked the show, what numerical value they would give it on a scale of one to ten and their favourite character from the show. • From this survey we acquired primary research from this research we gained quantitative data. • Our results were not reliable because the survey was completed by media students in the same age group, this means that they have similar interests, we can make this data reliable by surveying the students outside of the media groups and of a varied age. • 100% of the students we asked liked The Big Bang Theory. • Out of the votable characters Sheldon Cooper got the most votes because he is the main character on the show

  3. Secondary Research • We found our secondary research using Barb and Wikipedia. • Barb are a viewing figure websites using it you can look at TV shows with the most views this week and/or month, you can also find specific viewing figures for the TV show you wish. • From the Barb home page we clicked on “top tens” we then found the channel the show was aired on, which was E4, we then clicked on “E” and scrolled down to E4, selecting that we viewed the dates that we had decided upon to use for the The Big Bang Theory. • 581,000 on the 22nd August 2012 at 6:34pm • 568,000 on the 29th August 2012 at 6:32pm • 537,000 on the 07th  September 2012 at 8:02pm • 574,000 on the 14th September 2012 at 6:33pm • 674,000 on the 24th September 2012 at 6:31pm We found out that the viewing figures have been rapidly dropping since 2011.

  4. Typical Audience Member • The age of the typical audience member is between 14-40 we decided on this because there is a lot of mature banter and sarcasm, though it can be understood by a varied age group. • The show was originally aimed at a predominantly male audience. After the first season however the producers shifted their aim to a winder gender audience. They accomplished this by adding more females to the cast. • The program is on at a time when the middle class people would be relaxing mainly around dinner time. Although we think that the show isn’t aimed at any specific class. • The Big Bang Theory has a diverse cast and often touches upon stereotypes. • There isn’t a specific sexual orientation.
