“Big Picture” Description of UW Web Direction Presentation to UW Web Steering Committee Andrea Chappell, Carol Vogt 7 January 2005
Agenda • Review of direction • High level explanation of tech components (templates and CSS) • Some implications of the direction • Outstanding issues • Demonstration of using the template [Carol] UW Web Steering Committee - "Big Picture" review
Review of Direction • From “Gold Standard” to new template-based solution. • Satisfies and implements requirements, primarily: • Separates “look and feel” from content; • Eases job of content providers; • Allows UW-wide Web changes to more easily move into place (e.g., accessibility standards). • Primary components: Template, CSS UW Web Steering Committee - "Big Picture" review
What is a template? • Created by a knowledgeable Web designer! • Provides the basis for a new Web page, the basic layout and look. • Template defines the “container” for the content. • E.g., the position of the primary navigation menu and the collage on a UW Web page. • Changed by knowledgeable users. • E.g., change to the UW template (rare!); tailoring the UW template for a department or Faculty. UW Web Steering Committee - "Big Picture" review
How do templates work? • The template is linked into a Web page by the content provider. • E.g., in Contribute or Dreamweaver, as in demo. • Templates make some areas non-editable by the content provider. • E.g., the menu items of a department page cannot be changed by the content provider. • Editable regions for the content. • Pages based on the template automatically update when template changes. UW Web Steering Committee - "Big Picture" review
What are CSS? • CSS - Cascading Style Sheets • Allows one to format html page elements the way one wants. • E.g., set the default font; make all first level headings (<H1>) bold and blue. • Keeps the look consistent throughout the set of Web pages. • Allows easy changes to page element formats in a set of Web pages. UW Web Steering Committee - "Big Picture" review
How are CSS used? • The UW template includes CSS. • The UW common CSS is stored centrally. • Designer of a departmental or Faculty Web template can add own CSS. • Content providers will not need to worry about CSS. UW Web Steering Committee - "Big Picture" review
Implications of Direction • The navigation redesign (no drop-downs, for accessibility) means … • Departments/Faculties need to rethink their navigation (their “menus”). • For many content providers, Contribute 3 will be a good choice, meaning … • IST needs to assist with deployment of Contribute 3 html editor. • Need to define the process for UW template changes. UW Web Steering Committee - "Big Picture" review
Issues to move forward • Who “stamps with approval” the Look and Feel? • Needs to happen fairly soon! • Role of UW Web Operations. • Need “swat team” to help departments rethink and design their Web spaces, especially navigation. • Further investigation of the Contribute Publishing Services. • Within IST UW Web Technical Advancement project. UW Web Steering Committee - "Big Picture" review
Demo of using Template Things to think about during demo: • What does the content provider need to know? • Who would make changes to the template in your area? What help is needed? • What if we need to change the UW template? How does this happen? • What if there are changes to the CSS? UW Web Steering Committee - "Big Picture" review
