  2. Goal of the PBSIS Initiative Overall Reduction of behavior and discipline problems school-wide Inclusion of all students Develop a positive school climate Improve administrators and staff level practices for addressing behavior and conduct issues

  3. The PBSIS team has worked in districts K-12, throughout the state

  4. The Research on PBSIS says… The relationships we have with students and the environments that we create are more influential than any other competing factors in helping students to have successful outcomes.

  5. Our Task, Is to Create Environments That Foster School Connectedness Encourage positive relationships between students and adults Encourage positive interactions between students Display caring Create forums for students to be heard Provide lots of social praise Have clear expectations and routines Provide help, support, and intervention quickly

  6. PBSIS is All About… Consistency: all settings, all staff, all students Collaboration: input and feedback from everyone Decisions based on data: office referrals, suspensions, placement patterns, satisfaction, evaluation of practices

  7. Self Assessment of Climate Priorities Survey staff, students, and parents Building walkthrough Review office conduct and suspensiondata Summarize the results Present results to the school community

  8. Design a Recognition System How will we give feedback to the school community? Provide motivation Celebrate success Build positive school-wide relationships Form positive associations with school experience

  9. What are the Likely Outcomes for Our School? • Schools that implement School Wide PBSIS with fidelity report: • 15-40% decrease in referrals and suspensions • Increases in positive school climate among staff and students • Greater academic and behavioral success for all students

  10. What Will be Important to Our Success: That you’re honest in your feedback, but at the same time keep an open mind about what is possible You are willing to give PBSIS practices an honest try even when you are skeptical – try it first and then evaluate

  11. The PBSIS Partnership PBSIS is a collaboration between the New Jersey Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs and the Boggs Center at UMDNJ to support a PBSIS state team for training and technical assistance to targeted districts.
