Project Prepare! is an initiative by the Monroe County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC), sponsored by Chase-Pitkin, Midland Radio Corporation, and the Greater Rochester Chapter of the American Red Cross. We encourage residents to: purchase an All-Hazards Radio with S.A.M.E. technology, assemble a Disaster Supplies Kit, create an Emergency Plan for their households, and know where to find additional information. Stay informed and safe by using reliable sources and being prepared for any situation.

We recommend that residents: • Purchase an All-Hazards Radio with S.A.M.E. technology. • Assemble a Disaster Supplies Kit. • Create an Emergency Plan for your household. • Know how to get additional information. Do I need an All-Hazards Radio? • The combined All-Hazards/Weather Alert broadcast network is the single, most immediate source for comprehensive weather and emergency information available instantaneously to the public, in advance of TV and radio bulletins. • Radios can be adapted to alert deaf and hard of hearing people.

  4. What is S.A.M.E. Technology? Specific Area Message Encoding • Allows you to program your All-Hazards Radio with one or more County codes so that you will only be informed of alerts in specific areas of interest. • Must be within 40-50 miles of NOAA broadcast tower. All S.A.M.E. codes available on the National Weather Service website at: www.nws.noaa.gov/nwr/indexnw.htm

  7. Once I have been alerted . . . What’s next? • Additional information can be obtained by TV, radio or internet. • Local Emergency Alert System (EAS) Stations: • WHEC-TV (Channel 10) • WHAM (1180AM) • WVOR (100.5FM) Dial “911” only for life-threatening emergencies. Do not dial “911” for information.

Emergency Preparedness Begins With YOU!Disaster Supplies Kit Gather the following items and place them in a portable container: • A 3-day supply of food and water. • Clothing and bedding. • A first aid kit and prescription medications. • A battery powered radio, flashlight and extra batteries. • Cash, credit card, or traveler's checks.

Emergency Preparedness Begins With YOU!Family Emergency Plan Make sure all family members have the following information: • A place to meet outside your home. • Another place to meet outside your neighborhood. • An out-of-state family contact. • Emergency phone numbers. • Plans for what each family member will do if they are at home, or work, or school.

  10. Emergency Preparedness Begins With YOU!If you are told to “Shelter in Place” • Go inside. • Close all windows and doors. • Turn off all ventilation systems. • Turn on Radio or Television. • Stay Calm.
