Beamline CDF: fixing ISL L7 • Current status: • L7 is all cooled – 50% of ISL • Power on inner ladders triggers safety protection, due to layer 6 warm up • Reworking interlocks to allow operation • 1/3 of L6 is cooled • Plan is to have all ISL cooled before summer L6 L6 L7 2 readout ladders Module = Ladder cooled and powered Ladder cooled but not powered Ladder not cooled

  10. Inlet/outlet manifolds ~1,5 meters elbows CDF: fixing ISL Must reach blocked elbow through inlet manifolds

  11. CDF: fixing ISL Actual access is from COT face Plan is now to fix ISL in a series of short 3-4 day accesses

  12. CDF: Trigger • All elements for a physics trigger table in hand • Working on a table for first 6 months of 2002 data taking • Done by early January • Lot of L2 problems fixed: • Now cutting on jets and SVT • Running with multiple Alpha • L2 electrons are close • Current trigger more than adequate to deal with luminosity expected in first half of 2002

  13. CDF: SVT L2 cut on SVT Online D resolution • SVT fully functional • Uses tracks from XFT • Online fit of primary V. • Beam tilt aligned • Cutting at L2 • Still missing • Internal SVX alignment

  14. CDF: SVT These plots available atL3 SVT track pair invariant mass show clear evidence of strange and charm after decay length cut Peaks can be used to monitor SVT

  15. CDF: Particle ID Preliminary TOF results p pt GeV/c Preliminary dE/dx Measurements in COT K p

  16. CDF: Data • Currently ~5 pb-1 on-tape • Data Handling: • Over 80 Million events recorded on tape and processed by reconstruction farm • ~ 50 Tbyte of data stored in tape library • Several secondary data sets useful for physics being stripped: • J/y, W, Z, photons, jets, …

  18. CDF: J/y m+m- • Clear J/y signal • CMU or CMX • ~ 17,000 y’s • s = 26 MeV/c2 s(J/y) ~ 9 nb % from B ~ 20% First Run II B peak !!!!

  19. 5s xs reach Yellow Book 2000 No L00 Luminosity 5s xs reach BTB PAC proposal No L00 Luminosity CDF Physics by Summer 2002 • Expectation ~ 100-200 pb-1 by Summer 2002 • Incremental improvements and feasibility studies for top, EWK and QCD • Xs mixing parameter should be well within reach Dsfp only

  20. CDF Physics by end of 2002 • Expectation ~ 400 pb-1 by end of 2002 • sin(2b) with good accuracy • Sufficient statistics to update our previous top and W/Z measurements • Hints for new phenomena?! End 2002

  21. Current statusSummary • Tevatron back to pre-shutdown luminosity, but still ~6 month late on expected luminosity profile • The CDF detector is almost out of the commissioning phase and is taking data of good quality • The silicon systems are mostly fixed • L2 trigger is greatly improved and adequate to expected luminosity, in particular SVT works beautifully • We have a good chance of collecting 100-200 pb-1 by Summer 2002 and possibly present first results on xs and (maybe) sin(2b) on a similar time scale.

  22. Future upgrades • Fermilab is pursuing the goal of accumulating 15 fb-1 by FY 2008 • Increase the number of protons on the antiproton target • Better collection efficiency of antiprotons • Better cooling of the antiprotons • Better antiproton transfer efficiency • 200 page TDR available: • http://cosmo.fnal.gov/run2b/Documents/TDR/tdr.pdf

  23. Future upgrades • CDF needs to be upgraded to match this laboratory plan • Run IIA: Lmax ~ 2x1032 and total luminosity 2 fb-1 • Run IIB: L max ~ 5x1032 and total luminosity 15 fb-1 • CDF guidelines: • Implement minimum set of upgrades needed to preserve the current functionality at high luminosity • Upgrades will be installed in a 6-7 month period at beginning of 2005 • Major project deadlines: • October 2001: Run IIB upgrade TDR distributed • November 2001: upgrades discussed with PAC • December 2001: upgrades reviewed by Technical Committee • April 2002: PAC meeting • After PAC: DOE baseline review • Need MOU’s before this meeting

  24. Run IIb • Run IIB TDR completed – Included are: • SVX IIB: new silicon tracker ($ 11.2 M) • Scintillator based preshower ($ 0.76 M) • Replacement of CSX ($ 0.17 M) • EM calorimeter timing ($ 0.40 M) • Event builder/L3 trigger upgrade ($ 0.5 M) • Track trigger upgrade ($ 0.62 M) • Other trigger/DAQ upgrades(???) Need access to the detector - Schedule constrained by 2005 shutdown date Do NOT need access to detector so can be on a longer timescale Total with 30-50% contingency $ 13.7 M TDR available at http://ncdf12.fnal.gov/PAC/pac_Nov_01.html

  25. Run IIB • PAC review November 2, 2001 • Funding available from DOE 2002-2005 is $ 9.1 M • Recommendations: • http://www-cdf.fnal.gov/upgrades/run2b/PAC_Nov01/CDF+D0letterNov01.htm • Should focus on upgrades that are critical for the Higgs search • Simplify the silicon detectors • Concentrate mostly on silicon • Assign 40% contingency to all silicon items • Critical startup work for silicon detector approved: • SVX4 production • Silicon sensor prototypes • Hybrid/custom cable production • Stave mechanical/electrical prototype

  26. Run IIB • CDF acknowledges the limitations in funding, but considers the proposed limitations in scope hard to accept since: • They ignore other major parts of our physics program: • Supersymmetry, technicolor, extra dimensions and other exotic physics seaches • B physics beyond the run IIa • Given the current uncertainties on the final integrated luminosity, improvements of the detector beyond the silicon increase our probability of major discoveries. • Need good foreign support to expand the upgrade beyond the silicon detector replacement. Great time to join CDF! • Japan ~ $ 2.5 M for • silicon sensors • preshower PMT’s

  27. Run IIB • Lab Technical review December 4, 2001 • Reduced list of requests to the Lab to fit in the budget guideline • Silicon replacement (*) • Preshower (*) • Event builder upgrade • These items have received the full support of the review committee • Some upgrades are naturally dealt with as maintenance • L3 computers • CSX replacement (*) • CDF still supports the need for the remaining upgrades and is actively looking for funding out of the Laboratory: • University grants, NFS grants, foreign funds • Upgrades in this category are: • CEM timing (*) • L1 track trigger upgrades • Other Trigger/DAQ upgrades (*) indicates interest from some Italian group http://ncdf12.fnal.gov/trc/Trc_Dec_01.htm

  28. Run IIB • The Italian interests and activities for run IIB are still in the process of coming together • Clear interest for silicon, preshower, CEM timing and CSX • Growing interest to some trigger upgrades in the future • No urgency for funding in 2002except for • our contribution to SVX4 chip production • silicon Power Supply R&D • Preradiator R&D • SJ on CSX scintillator • A funding profile for 2002-2004 should be defined subject to further verification based on the evolution of the interest of Italian physicists and groups, and of the review and funding process in the USA • More details on individual projects follow

  29. Run IIB Silicon • Physics: B, Higgs/Exotic searches, QCD, ….. • Status of approval: • PAC/Lab director recommend to start R&D for all critical elements • SVX4 chip development and production • Cost: 30 kEuro (R&D){funded} + 100 kEuro (1/3 of chip production) • Funding year: 2002 • Foreign Institutions on sub-project: LBL, FNAL • Italian Institutions on sub-project: Padova • Physicists on sub-project: Bacchetta, Neviani, Centro • Power supplies development and production • Cost: 20 kEuro (R&D) + 150 kEuro (1/3 of production) • Funding year: 20 kEuro in 2002, remaining in 2003-2004 • Foreign Institutions on sub-project: FNAL • Italian Institutions on sub-project: Padova • Physicists on project: Bacchetta, Bisello, technical personnel

  31. Other run2b projects: Pre-shower • Pre-shower used in > 100 Run I analysis papers • Current implementation with wire chamber cannot stand the rate of run IIB • Need faster scintillator based implementation Pre-shower located after magnet coil in front of central EM calorimeter

  32. Other run2b projects: Pre-shower • Motivations: • Electron ID • Allows data driven bck determination • g/p0 separation (statistical only) • Above 35 GeV cannot separate g from p0 in shower max chamber • Use pulse hight from single and double g in pre-shower • Improve e/g/jet energy measurement • Correct for energy lost in coil p p e Low pt electrons High pt electrons e

  33. Other Run IIB projects • New preshower • Physics: Higgs (jet resolution), g/p0 separation, electron ID • Status of approval (December 2001): • Endorsed by technical review committee. Expect approval at April PAC • R&D, PMT Power supplies, fibers, installation • May have a more significant part on detector construction • Cost: 20 kEuro (R&D) + 130 kEuro production • Funding year: 2002 (R&D), 2003-2004 production • Foreign Institutions: Argonne, Tsukuba, Michigan State • Italian Institutions on project: Pisa (with members fromSiena), LNF • Physicists on project: Lami et al.

  34. CEM timing • Motivation: • Reduce cosmic ray background • Critical for SUSY searches which rely on photons • Our eeggET had 2 EM object missing timing information! SM Background estimate of 10-6

  35. CEM timing • Examples: • EWK physics: Wg,Zg production • SUSY searches: N2g G ~ ~

  36. Other Run IIB projects • EM Calorimeter timing • Physics: photon purity (SUSY), long lived particles decaying to g (SUSY) • Status of approval: • Approval not requested until better understanding of CEM PMT base modification impact is reached. • Discriminator boards (LNF design – same as Run IIA) • Cost: • 150 kEuro • Funding year: 2003-2004 • Foreign Institutions: Texas A&M, Chicago • Italian Institutions: LNF • Physicists on project: Cordelli at al.

  37. Other Run IIB projects • CMX Scintillator Counters • Physics:all muon related signatures • Status of approval: • Lab approval not required. Will be treated as a detector maintenance project. CDF will decide based on the understanding of the counter performance and their degradation. However: • Delaying too much may compromise possibility of replacement during the 2005 shutdown. Building now is an insurance toward likely future degradation. • Counter fabrication/installation and commissioning • Cost: • 85 kEuro (scintillator/fabrication – 50% of all counters) + • 75 kEuro (installation and refurbishing of current system) • Funding year: 2002?(85 kEuro), 2003-2004 (75 kEuro) • Foreign Institutions: JINR-Dubna • Italian Institutions: Udine (with physicists from Pavia, Trieste, Roma), Pisa • Physicists on project: Pauletta, Menzione et al.
