  1. Warm-UpJanuary 24, 2013 • Write down the date and today’s objective on your Daily Work Organizer. • Objective: SWBAT quantify mass and volume through an inquiry based lab. • Complete the following warm-up: • Write at least 3 points concerning the entrance/warm-up procedures. • Are late homework assignments accepted?

Flashback • Rules • Procedures • Expectations • No talking while others are talking. • This includes me OR any of your classmates • Stay in your seat unless granted permission. • No food or drink (except for H2O) • No hats or electronics. • This includes snapbacks, holiday hats, cell phones, iPods, boys, girls etc.

  4. Absences • 10 or more absences = automatic failure unless you make up the time before/after school • If you are absent, pick up the work from the bin for your class period. • You have 5 days from the day you return to complete the assignments and turn in the work- after that time it is a ZERO. • You are responsible for all missed work, whether it was an excused or unexcused absence. • You are responsible for finding out what you missed. • Mark absent on your DWO.

  5. Re-takes • You can only complete re-takes before or after school. • You have one week from the time I hand out the exams to re-take the exam. After that your original grade stands. • You must have your review completed and complete test corrections to re-take an exam. • In the re-take you can get half of your points back that you missed.

  6. Lab Safety • Do not handle any materials until instructed to do so. • Perform only those experiments authorized by the teacher. Carefully follow all instructions, both written and verbal. • Be prepared for you work during activities and labs. Read all procedures thoroughly before beginning the lab. • No fooling around in the classroom. Horseplay, practical jokes, and pranks are dangerous and prohibited. • Report any accidents (spills, breakage, etc.) or injury of a student to the teacher immediately. Do not panic. • All chemicals in the lab are considered dangerous. Avoid handling chemicals with your fingers. Do not taste, smell, or drink any chemical.

  7. Lab Safety • Never remove any chemicals or equipment from the classroom. • Never handle broken glass with your bare hands. If something breaks, notify the teacher immediately! • Do not operate a hot plate by yourself. Take care so that clothing and hands are at a safe distance form the hot plate at all times. • Never look into a container that is being heated. • Always wear safety goggles when working with chemicals. • Clean and return any materials to their proper place before leaving the classroom. • Wash your hands when you finish cleaning.

  8. How to use a balance • Place the object on the balance • Move the “slides” until the needle lines up with the mark. It must be in “dip.” • Start with the 1s, then 10s, then 100s • Add the numbers from where the slides sit • Add the 100s, 10s, and 1s to find the total mass

  11. Mass Lab • Your job is to measure and record the mass of each object. Do not take stuff out of the bag. • Present the data in a logical fashion. Your grade depends on how much it makes sense. • 1 page per group.

Mass Lab Group Roles • Everyone in the group should be participating in the lab! • Supply Collector • Pick up and return all supplies • Recorder • Record the information required on your paper to turn in • Triple Beam Balancer • Use the triple beam balance to find the mass of the objects • Leader • Make sure all group members are participating and on task • Make sure directions are followed and ask questions if unclear • Make sure area is clean when completed with the lab

  13. Lab directions in summary • Record mass of each lettered bag (+ pencil box = G) • Present information in a logical fashion • Create a title and include names of all group members (1 page per group) • Don’t open the bags • Do not let one person dominate the group

  14. Mass • You all know how to measure mass but what is it?

NOTES The Consensus • Mass is a measure of the amount of atomic “stuff”. • When two things composed of the same substance are compared, the larger one has more mass. • When comparing things composed of different substances, size CANNOT be used to determine which one has more mass. • The kilogram (kg) is the unit used to measure mass (SI system of units). In the lab, we will usually use grams (g).

  25. Procedure for Exiting Room • Clean your area – put away all borrowed supplies • Stay in your seats until I dismiss you • Tuck in your chairs when you leave and throw your trash away on the way out • If your area is not clean, you will get to stay after class the next day
