The Legacy of Impressionism and French Paintings 19th Century Impressionism was a major artistic movement that originated in France in the late 19th and early 20th century, first in painting and then in music. The work of a group of artists sharing a set of linked methods and techniques between 1867 and 1886 is known as Impressionist. French paintings 19th century attempts to objectively and adequately portray visual reality in terms of fleeting effects of light and colour were the most prominent feature of Impressionism in painting. The History Landscape painting in early nineteenth-century France was strictly regulated by an artistic code upheld by the orthodox French Academy. Artists, painters, and sculptors were carefully trained in the Neoclassical tradition to replicate Renaissance and ancient antiquity.

  2. Pure landscape painting was not considered a privilege in the Academy's hierarchy of historical subjects. At most, artists might be able to create a romanticized version of nature-based on ancient poetry. What Happened? Artwork created in early 19th-century France followed the teachings of the Parisian state-sponsored art academy, the École des Beaux-Arts. The school encouraged pupils to use delicate line work and soft, blended shading in their works, emphasizing draughtsmanship above painting. Many Impressionist artists in France were schooled in the Academic style, but they later abandoned it in favour of their distinctive loose, expressive brushwork and depictions of daily life. What Impressionism Represents During the mid-19th-century, the artists who became known as impressionists concluded that academic art's clean idealized presentation was formulaic and artificial. Their loose, unstructured brushwork signalled their departure from the highly detailed academic style. They were also original in their subject matter, opting for motifs that the instructor did not preach, such as landscapes or everyday activities, which the Academy deemed insignificant or degenerate. The Painters Claude Monet, Pierre Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissarro, Alfred Sisley, Berthe Morisot, Armand Guillaumin, and Frédéric Bazille were the main Impressionist painters who collaborated, influenced, and showed together. Artists like Eugene Galien Laloue were yet another chronicler of everyday life in Paris.   3. The ambitious impressionist movement had upended contemporary artistic organizations and allowed artists to experiment with new ways of expressing themselves. As the impressionist movement came to an end, a multitude of styles emerged. It had made a revolution in the history of art in its brief existence. It offered a technical starting point for Postimpressionist painters and liberating all subsequent Western painting from old techniques, and subject matter approaches.
