OVERVIEW/OBJECTIVE • Define Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender identities and explore the concept of heteronormativity • Discuss how stigmas link to high rates of HIV infections in this population • Examine how stigma impacts the efficacy of “traditional” HIV prevention messages • Identify how you can breakdown stigmas in their own professions

PHILADELPHIA FIGHT • Founded in 1990, Philadelphia FIGHT (Field Initiating Group for HIV Trials) was originally a community clinical trials network. • Jonathan Lax Center : HIV Primary Care, Pharmacy services, Clinical Trials • Diana Baldwin Clinic: Mental Health Services • Case Management and Various Support Groups • AIDS Library, Project TEACH and TEACH Outside • HIV Counseling and Testing • Critical Path Project • Institute for Community Justice

  5. Youth Health Empowerment Project • Founded in 1994, Y-HEP started out a street outreach based program. It has since grown into one of the most prominent agencies in Philadelphia working with young people. Y-HEP provides young people ages 13-24 with support around HIV prevention and leadership development through programs rooted in art, empowerment and harm reduction.

What is LGBTQI? • Lesbian – A women who is emotionally, romantically, and sexually attraction to other female or female bodied people. • Gay – A man who is emotionally, romantically, and sexually attracted to other males or male bodied people. • Bisexual – Emotional, romantic, and sexual attraction to both sex • Transgender – Umbrella term referring to people whose gender identity differ from social expectations if their biological sex. • Queer – someone who does not indentify with lesbian, gay or bisexual for political reasons. • Questioning -someone who is still discovering their sexual identity • Intersex-An individual with both male an female biological attributes (primary and secondary sexual characteristics)[UNAIDS,2011].

I just met you, and this is crazy… • STEREOTYPES • A belief that may be adopted about specific types of individuals or certain ways of doing things, but that belief may not or may not accurately reflect reality • HETEROSEXISM • The assumption that everyone is heterosexual and that heterosexuality is the only ‘normal’ right

  9. …call me, maybe? • HETERONORMATIVITY • A socially constructed concept that promotes heterosexuality as the normal or perferred sexual orientation. How does stereotypes and heteronormativity impact a LGBTQI youth’s decisions around sexual health?
