Howdo these characters impact today’s society? 3. Select three characters from A Gathering of Old Men. Connect each character to a stereotypical character from slavery and post-slavery cartoons and depictions.

  3. Assignment • Write a five paragraph essay in class supporting your theory. You are expected to use the persuasive strategies you learned during the first nine weeks: pathos, ethos, kairos, and logos. • Include an outline. • You will submit your thesis statement in class on Tuesday. • On Wednesday, you will complete your first draft. • On Thursday and Friday, you will present your paper to the class. Include one visual aid poster for your presentation. • Bring any materials to class each day. You will be given class time to complete the paper and poster.

  4. Sample Thesis The Sambo, Mammy, and Pickaninny stereotypical characters of slavery create a false standard of how men, women, and children should wear their hair today. The stereotypical Mammy of the slave era affected acceptable forms of beauty, namely complexion, size of mouth, and physique.
