What is Ketamine? • Ketamine Hydrocholide is one of the most popular “dance drugs” used by the nightclub and rave communities. • Belongs to a class of drugs called "dissociative anaesthetics," which separate perception from sensation. • Comes as a liquid in small pharmaceutical bottles, and is most often cooked into a white powder for snorting. 2

  3. What is Ketamine? • Ketamine is also used by veterinarians as a tranquilizer for large mammals. 3

  4. What are its effects? • At lower doses, similar to nitrous oxide. • Higher doses produce a hallucinogenic effect; may cause the user to feel very far away from their body. • Often referred to as entering a "K-hole" and has been compared to a near death experience with sensations of rising above one's body. • While in a K-hole it is very difficult to move. 4

  5. What is the dosage? • Most people snort small lines or "bumps". Effects come on within 5 to 10 minutes. • 100mg is usually enough to enter a K-hole. • If liquid is injected, less is needed to enter a K-hole. • If swallowed, the effects come on in 10 - 20 minutes. • Occasionally ketamine is sold in a capsule as "Ecstasy”. 5

  6. What are the risks? • Low doses can increase heart-rate. Higher doses depress consciousness and breathing. • K is extremely dangerous to combine with alcohol, Valium or GHB. • Frequent use can cause disruptions in consciousness, neuroses. • Ketamine can cause psychological dependence. 6
