  2. Ecosystem • An ecosystem is a community of living organisms in conjunction with their environment, interacting as a system.

  3. Facts about Malaysia’s ecosystem Abiotic Components • Climate: Tropical • Average temperature :27.5 °C • Annual rainfall: 2409 mm • Mean relative humidity: 62.6%

  4. Facts about Malaysia’s ecosystem Abiotic Components • Between Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia is the South China Sea, the largest body of water around Malaysia. Facing the western coast of Peninsular Malaysia there is the Straits of Malacca towards the south, and the Andaman Sea towards the north.

  5. Facts about Malaysia’s ecosystem Abiotic Components • Total land area: 329,847 square kilometres  •  About half of Peninsular Malaysia is covered by granite and other igneous rock, a third more is covered by stratified rocks older than the granite, and the remainder is covered by alluvium.

  7. Ecotourism • Ecotourismis a form of tourism with aims to educate the traveler, to provide funds for ecological conservation, to directly benefit the economic development and political empowerment of local communities. Mt. Kinabalu

  8. Potentials of Malaysia to develop ecotourism • One of the world’s top 12 mega diversity area • A variety of ecosystems: mangroves, swamps, mountains, coral reefs, limestone and caves.

  9. Development of ecotourism • In 1995 the government produced the National Ecotourism Plan along with WWF Malaysia. • Since then, the government gradually implemented different stages of developing tourism in her regions.

  10. Sabah and Sarawak are heavily focused on ecotourism. Both two focuses much on nature tourism. Sabah Sarawak Cultural Viilage

We will examine two popular eco tour destination in Malaysia: Langkawi, which we visited during Easter holiday and Sabah. • We will discuss their potential in having ecotourism, and their major attractions. • Making use of our experience in Langkawi will also add some first hand information for the examination.

  12. Langkawi: ecotourism Potential • Renowned for its biodiversity and beautiful landscapes • Mature development in toruism for the recent years • Abundant flow of tourists every year • Support from local government for tourism

  14. Observation during Langawi trip • Tourism industry is prosperous, with a large numbers of guesthouses, resorts, tourist attractions. Many of the locals engage in tourism. • During our visit to the country park(TelagaTujuh), we were able to encounter different kinds of rare species. Yet, there was little(or no) education provided to the tourists in the area. • In brief conclusion, only if you’re accompanied with professional tour guides can you have the opportunity to know more about the local environment.

Sabah’s ecotoruism Potentials • Sabah boasts of 70,097 hectares of wildlife, bird and marine sanctuaries, 909,401 hectares of forest reserves, and 265,749 hectares of parks, including coral reefs, which are well managed by the state government agencies. • a prime ecotourism destination. • Wildlife studies made by the National Geographic revealed that 10 square kilometers of Sabah has more flora and fauna than North America and Europe combined.
