  2. Nouns • Nouns carry important information in a sentence and complete sentences require a noun.

  3. Common Nouns • General name for a person, place, thing, or idea. • not capitalized

  4. Proper nouns • name of particular person, place, thing, or idea • always capitalized

  5. Collective nouns • words that name a group of people of things • names specific groups

  6. Possessive nouns • form of a noun shows ownership of relationship • add apostrophe

  7. Compound nouns • made of two or more words together as a single noun • may be single, two or more separate words, or hyphenated

  8. Verbs • Verbs show what the noun/subject is doing.

  9. TO BE VERBS • Verbs that don’t show that much action. • EX. Am, is, are, was, were, been, being, has been, had been, will be.

  10. Adjectives • An adjective describes or modifies a noun. It answers one of the following questions: What kind? How many? Or which one?

  11. Articles • Articles indicate/warn that a noun is coming. The three articles are: a, an, the.

  12. Adverbs • Adverbs answer one of the following questions: How? When? Or to what extent?

  13. Prepositions • Prepositions show the relationship of one thing to another.

  14. Conjunctions • A conjunction is a rod/nail/peg used to join words or groups of words.

  15. Pronoun • A pronoun is a word that is used in place of a common or proper noun.
