  1. Welcome to AP/DE Biology! Find a seat and get out your iPad or macbook. While you wait for class to begin, draw or type two things you remember from BIOLOGY

  3. Tip 1: Get to know your teacher

  4. Mrs. Liz Ashby (BS Biology, MAED, NBCT) College Educated - William and Mary (undergrad) and Virginia Tech (masters) Certified - Biology and Physics (all levels), Nationally Board Certified Experienced - 10+ years Once described in a student evaluation as “Mildly judgemental and standoffish, but likeable.”

  5. Tip 2: Get to know the subject

  6. “AP Biology and Senioritis are a great pair!” Is this statement true or false? True False

  7. College level labs and lectures (if you write slow, consider getting the notes at home) • College level assignments (don’t procrastinate!) • 8 credits (bio for non-majors) • Separate DE grade (that will FOLLOW you!) • Build good habits now, while you still can... My Job: Prepare you for College

  8. Brand new curriculum • Eight total units • Lots of Labs • Mix of short answer essays and multiple choice assessments • AP Exam is required for the AP label (or just take the DE and run) My Job: Prepare you for the AP Exam

  9. Tip 3: Get your stuff together

  10. What do I need for class? That’s All!* • Something to write with • Something to keep you organized • Something to access the internet *But your own calculator and your own colored pencils are also really nice to have...

  11. Tip 4: Get to know the syllabus (the highlights)

  12. This Class is designed to challenge you! The most important thing.

  13. Ashby’s Quirks (So you can’t say you weren’t warned!)

  14. Grades All grades based on a point system. Harder assignments are worth more points. Tests are worth the most points. Pass the tests, pass the class. This class is mostly tests/quizzes. Homework/Group work are designed to prepare you for those tests/quizzes. Limited Extra Credit Due dates are STRICT. I only take late work if excused or an extension was arranged in advance. You must have a 70C- or higher for DE credit.

  15. Your Choices, Your Success, Your consequences This is a college course. To be successful, prepare to study/review 20-30 minutes every night. Expect daily homework. Procrastination will HURT you. There will be a final research paper. There are limited second chances and limited Ashby Passes. *Please read the statement on cheating! KEEP YOUR CELLPHONE IN YOUR BAG.

  16. With rules/norms, it’s important to understand why! Write about how each of these will be crucial in college: • Doing your own work 3. Collaborating correctly 4. Completing assignments 2. Paying attention in class

Odds and Ends Textbooks- assigned/expensive $$ Food- water only Cell Phones- in your bag or in the box Seating Chart- tests only Tutoring- before/after school or 4th block; please schedule in advance Prerequisites- biology/chemistry Fast Pace!
