  2. Our society is now defined as the "Information Society” a society in which low-cost information and ICT are in general use, or as the "Knowledge Society"

  3. What is Knowledge? • Information combined with experience which a person, organization is aware. • Gained by experience and learning. • Also used to mean the confident understanding of a subject.

  4. Knowledge Society A formal association of people with similar interests who try to make effective use of their combined knowledge about their area of interest.

  5. Not be constrained by geographic proximity What is new? • More possibilities for sharing, archiving and retrieving knowledge • Knowledge has become the most important capital in the present age

  6. Knowledge societies are not a new occurrence. Fishermen have long shared the knowledge of predicting the weather to their community. This knowledge gets added to the social capital of the community.

  7. Characteristic Knowledge forms major component of any activity all other human activities become dependent on a huge volume of knowledge and information

  8. Characteristic Borderlessness : because knowledge travels even more effortlessly than money. Upward mobility: available to everyone through easily acquired formal education.

  9. Increasing Relevance Knowledge and information are Vital Components Every society is formed around some Share Concepts

  10. Freedom • Knowledge by nature is free • Knowledge should be free for better of society

  11. Institution in Knowledge Society • Not only businesses but also … • School • University • Hospital

  12. Example of societies Teachers teaching the same subject. Fans of the same musical group. Artists with similar interests.

  13. Knowledge Workers At Present : Doctors, Lawyers, Teachers, Accountants, Chemical Engineers In Future : “Knowledge Technologist” Computer Technicians, Software Designers, Analyst in Clinical Labs

  14. INFRASTRUCTURE Physical: meeting places, notice boards Technological:local language content sharing, web portals, wikis, chat rooms
