  1. AP Literature and Composition January 8, 2009 Ms. Cares

  2. Agenda: • Book Talk - In order to prepare one another for continued reading, we are going to provide a quick reviews for one another. • Harlem Renaissance – An introduction to the cultural movement and its art and music. Homework: Read _____________ and interpret it from a historical perspective (applying what you learned during today’s class).

  3. Book Talk – 5 minutes to prepare: Because we are constantly considering what future books to read, it’s helpful to consider one another’s opinions. Meet with small groups from the past two days and prepare a brief synopsis of the novel. One person from the group will present, and consider the following questions: What was it about? Was it interesting? Would you recommend it to others? To some people but not others? Explain.

  4. The Harlem Renaissance: Harlem is a neighborhood within the Manhattan borough of NYC.

  5. The Harlem Renaissance: After the Great Migration, Harlem became an epicenter for African-American culture and political activism. Individuals to come out of the Harlem Renaissance include: W.E.B. DuBois Langston Hughes Countee Cullen Claude McKay Zora Neale Hurston Billie Holiday Duke Ellington Louis Armstrong

  6. The art and music… As astute critics of literature, we must now broaden our horizons to the other fine arts including visual print and music. We are going to example two samples of non-written Harlem Renaissance art.
