AP Literature and Composition March 9, 2009 Ms. Cares
Agenda: • Finish discussing the AP sample set from Friday: applying meter. • The Victorian Era: to better explore Jane Eyre, we need to understand a bit about the Victorian Era. To do this, we’ll complete the following: -Victorian art viewing and discussion. -Non-fiction reading selection (Thomas Carlyle’s Past and Present).
Viewing Activity: • Each of the following paintings was selected because it represents a characteristic of the Victorian Era. • For each painting, record your initial observations just as though you were performing textual analysis: What is the dramatic situation of the painting? The setting? The tone? The subject?
Thomas Carlyle’s Past and Present: • Non-fiction • One of Victorian Era’s most prolific treatise. • As you read, you should mark the text. Be prepared for tomorrow’s discussion on the Carlyle’s argument and on the Victorian Era as a whole.
