  2. - ragtime: pianomuziek , ontstaan eind 19e eeuw. Kenmerk: strakke bas met syncopische melodie. (ragged = verscheurd) Belangrijkste artiest: Scott Joplin - inspiratiebron: cakewalk: satirische slavendans, westerse dans wordt geïmiteerd. In 1901, a former slave told the actor Leigh Whipper: "Us slaves watched white folks' parties where the guests danced a minuet and then paraded in a grand march, with the ladies and gentlemen going different ways and then meeting again, arm in arm, and marching down the center together. Then we'd do it too, but we used to mock 'em every step. Sometimes the white folks noticed it, but they seemed to like it; I guess they thought we couldn't dance any better"

  4. Jazz: ontstaan in New Orleans, begin 20e eeuw. Ontstaan uit ragtime, blues, gospel, volksmuziek en klassieke muziek. New Orleans: smeltkroes van culturen, rassen en volkeren. Belanrijke artiesten: • Louis Armstrong (storyville, later Chicago) • Joseph King Oliver (Chicago) Vanaf 1915: blanke variant van Jazz uit storyville: Dixieland
