  2. Controversy /Thesis Development • Stem cell therapy is a widely promising technique that potentially can cure a wide variety of diseases and disabilities (Goo and Poo, 2010). Unfortunately, stem cell research is one of the most controversial issues in science today . The issue revolves around the two types of stem cells currently in use: embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells. The controversy is that embryonic stem cells are obtained from destroyed human embryos Miller and Levine, 2002). I believe that embryonic stem cell technology is ethical. In this paper I will seek to justify the use of embryonic stem cell technology for medical purposes.

  3. Experiment analysis • Smith and Wesson (2007) conducted a study on the usefulness of embryonic stem cells in curing suspensory ligament injuries in horses. The researchers hypothesized that injection of embryonic stem cell into the ligament would increase and accelerate healing in treated horses versus the control. Ten horses with suspensory ligament injuries were injected with embryonic stem cells from equine placental cords. An additional 10 horses (control group)were injected with saline. At the end of 6 months, the horses were given scans to determine amount of healing and were given a lameness

  4. continued • evaluation. Six of the ten horses injected with stem cells showed healing of the ligament and passed the lameness evaluation, while only 2 control horses showed healing and no lameness. In addition, all 6 treated horses were sound enough to be ridden and 4 of the 6 were able to resume racing careers. The value of this experiment was to demonstrate a clinical use of stem cell therapy. Also, no embryos were destroyed because the cells came from placental cord blood. Limitations of this experiment was the small number of patients of only 1 species.

  5. Defense • Based upon the information that I have just discussed I believe the use of embryonic stem cell therapy is justified. While Martin and Brower (2010) and Dumb and Dumber (2004) clearly present viable arguments against stem cell therapy due to destruction of human embryos, Smith and Wesson (2007), Gill and Lung (2005) and Gut and Nerve (2009) demonstrate real cures in a variety of species and diseases. There based on this overwhelming evidence, I believe stem cell research should not only continue but be expanded.
