Traditional Assessment/Reporting • Sort and select students • Not all students can learn, that education should identify the very best, and that some students should fail • Education was developed in a way that all students were taught the same way, given the same amount of time, and tested with using the same assessments

What are Standards? • A standard defines what a student should know and be able to do in each subject area at each grade level. • All subjects have grade level standards. • Standards help shape the curriculum from one grade to the next because teachers know what instruction has already occurred.

  6. What is Standards-based Assessment? • Indicates what students know and are able to do. • Measures a student’s progress toward the attainment of a standard. • Indicates if the student has mastered the standard. • Is ongoing. • Clearly communicates expectations ahead of time.

What is Standards-based Assessment? • Is authentic to the learning experiences of the students, based on complex tasks, as opposed to rote memory. • Occurs when appropriate, not just on scheduled days. • Often uses tasks that reveal common misunderstandings so teachers can see whether students have truly learned the material. • Assessment is based on the results of multiple experiences over time.

Next year… • Students are aware of the criteria (what they need to learn) • Students know in advance what the assessment will be based upon • Students are provided with feedback in order to improve • Students are provided with opportunities to show improvement in order to be successful • In real-life, attainment of important milestones (SATs, certificates, drivers’ licenses, CPA, bar exam, medical boards, etc.) allows for multiple corrections along the way

Purpose of the Report Card • The purpose of the Middle School report card is: • To involve parents and students while enhancing communication with the school. • To communicate behaviors needed to support learning. • To report your child’s progress towards meeting curricular standards. • To inform parents about your child’s successes and to suggest further direction.

How will behaviors be reported? • Learning skills are work habits and behaviors that support the process of learning. • At ISE, these skills are known as Expected Schoolwide Learning Results (ESLRs) • Critical Self-Directed Thinkers • Empowered 21st Century Learners • Effective Communicators • Responsible Global Leaders

  14. Are other schools doing this? • Yes, both International and American based schools have begun using standard-based reporting. • Some Examples: • Shekou International School • Hong Kong International School • Madison School District • Shanghai American School

  15. Next Steps • Assessment Policy in place for August 2012 • New standards-based reports for the middle school in 2012-13 and for the high school in 2013-14

  16. Finally… • A standards-based report card is one component of an overall communication system about student learning.

Why Change? • Students will get more information about: what he/she is expected to learn • Strengths and weakness are specific to each subject • Work habits and behaviors are important to learning • Single grades hide student strengths and weaknesses. • Single grades often combine different factors
