BACKPACK SAFETY. WEIGHT. Backpack weight should NEVER exceed 5-10 % of body weight. For example: A 125 lb. female should not carry a backpack that weighs more than 6 to 13 lbs. A 165 lb. Male should not carry a backpack that weighs more than 8 to 17 lbs. . Injury to muscles and joints.

  2. WEIGHT • Backpack weight should NEVER exceed 5-10 % of body weight. • For example: A 125 lb. female should not carry a backpack that weighs more than 6 to 13 lbs. • A 165 lb. Male should not carry a backpack that weighs more than 8 to 17 lbs.

  3. Injury to muscles and joints. Severe back, shoulder, and neck pain. Poor posture. What can happen if your backpack is too heavy?

  4. The Right Backpack • Wide , padded shoulder straps • Two shoulder straps • Padded back • Waist strap • Lightweight backpack

  5. Always use both shoulder straps Tighten the straps Wear the backpack so the shoulders support the weight not the lower back Pack light Organize the backpack Stop often at school lockers Bend using both knees Learn back strengthening exercises To Prevent injury
