  1. LSWG Day 2 September 2014Injection and dump, including protection elements and abort gap cleaning Jan Uythoven For the ABT group & friends

  2. Outline ABT equipment concerned MDs during Run 1 MD requests for Run 2 Jan Uythoven, Injection and dump

  3. Equipment concerned • Injection Systems • TI8 and TI2 Transfer Lines • Injection kickers MKI • Injection protection elements: TDI, TCLIs • Related: Injection Quality Control (IQC), beam induced heating (MKI, TDI), injection gap cleaning, BLMs injection region • Beam Dump Systems • Kickers: MKD, MKB • Protection elements: TCDQ, TCSGP • Dump lines, TDE • Related: Xternal Post Operation Check (XPOC), Abort Gap Cleaning, Abort Gap Keeper • MKA, MKQ, AC-dipole • Used for MDs, not the topic of study so far Jan Uythoven, Injection and dump

  4. MDs Run 1 • Injection studies • CERN-ATS-Note-2011-063 MD“MD on Injection Quality – Longitudinal and Transverse Parameters” • CERN-ATS-Note-2012-090 MD “Injection MD” • CERN-ATS-2013-061“SPS Scraping and LHC Transverse Tails” • ATS-Note-2011-049 MD “TI8 Shielding Studies and Angular alignment of TDI and TCDQ” • ATS-Note-2011-067 MD “Quench Margin at Injection” • ATS-Note-2011-050 MD “Injection into LHC of bunches at 25 ns spacing” • ATS-Note-2011-014 MD “Moving the recombination chambers to replace the Tertiary collimators in IR2” • IPAC14 WEPRI092 “Test and simulation results for quenches induced by fast losses on a LHC quadrupole”, concerns injection area Q6 Jan Uythoven, Injection and dump

  5. MDs Run 1 • UFO studies • CERN-ATS-Note-2012-018 MD“MD on UFOs at MKIs and MKQs” • CERN-ATS-Note-2011-065 MD “MKI UFOs at injection” Jan Uythoven, Injection and dump

  6. MDs Run 1 • Beam Dump Studies • ATS-Note-2011-067 MD “Quench Margin at Injection” • ATS-Note-2011-049 MD “TI8 Shielding Studies and Angular alignment of TDI and TCDQ” • ATS-Note-2011-128 PERF “Summary of Abort Gap cleaning tests performed at 3.5 TeV on October 7, 2011” and many similar PERF notes • CERN-ATS-Note-2010-050 PERF “Summary of Injection pre-cleaning tests performed on October 27, 2010” Jan Uythoven, Injection and dump

  7. MDs Run 2: Injection Studies • Possible topics • Stability (MKE), Steering, Injection losses • Protection set-up, especially TCDIs and TDIs • Simulation of MKIs failures and loss measurements (IPAC2014, MPPRO020) • Beam induced heating of the new TDIs • ‘Blindable’ BLMs in the injection regions and BLM thresholds • Matching monitors • Initial set-up will need to be done during the re-commissioning period including the new BETS on MSI and TDI. • There will certainly be questions arising following operation which will require dedicated study periods during the year • Exact topics and required time difficult to determine before first beams • If things go well, no special MKI UFO MDs required Jan Uythoven, Injection and dump

  8. MDs Run 2: Beam Dumping System • Abort Gap Cleaning with the transverse damper ADT • Different cleaning algorithms and hardware settings (with ADT team) • Effect of AGC on emittance and luminosity (possibly / partly parasitically in physics) • Automatic cleaning with new BSRA hardware and software (with BI team) • Population of abort gap (with RF-team) • New BPMS system for interlocking / protection of the extraction channel (together with BI team) • Again, initial set-up to be done during re-commissioning period but additional studies expected Jan Uythoven, Injection and dump

  9. MDs Run 2: Asynchronous Dumps • TCDQ – TCT retraction and losses • Dependence on losses on TCT following TCDQ / TCSG / TCT retraction. Together with collimation team • See simulations by Roderick Bruce, presented MPP 22nd August 2014. Related to ATS optics. • Loss maps and normal dumps under different conditions • Could be more efficient during initial commissioning period for measurements at top energy • TCDQ impedance, see LSWG 26/10/2012 • Effect of MKD failure mode, measurement with provoked asynchronous dump • Q4 IP6 quench level (IPAC2014, WEPRI092) • In collaboration with BLM Threshold Working Group • Initial commissioning during re-commissioning period • Also the measurement of the MKD-system rise time with beam, which determines the length of the abort gap, should be done during the initial set-up of the Abort Gap Keeper Jan Uythoven, Injection and dump
