  3. Romania GERD as % of GDP = 0.53% EU-27 = 1.83%

The Innovation Union, one of seven flagship initiatives in Europe 2020: Improve framework conditions and access to finance for research and innovation to ensure that innovative ideas become products and services creating growth and jobs Focus on societal challenges: e.g. climate change, energy and resource efficiency, health and demographic change and strengthen links in the innovation chain by: • Completing ERA, with a strategic research agenda focused on these challenges • Improving framework conditions for business to innovate • Creating 'European Innovation Partnerships' between the EU and national levels to speed up the development and deployment of the technologies needed to meet the challenges identified.

  5. FP7 Health Programme • Main policy drivers: • Improving health of European citizens • Increasing competitiveness of European health-related industries and businesses • Addressing global health issues

  6. FP7 Health ThemeResults to date 433 contracts signed (March 2010): • 4 574 participants  566 SMEs (~11%) • EU contribution ~ € 1.8 billion

FP7 Health ThemeResults to date – Romanian participation • 31 individual participations by 22 institutions in 25 FP7 projects • 230 proposals out of a total of 2639 • 18th ranked MS for eligible applications • 17th ranked MS for number of participations • 20th ranked MS for funding (total: ~€4M)

  8. Research priorities for the immediate future • Effects of lifestyle on health • Supporting clinical trials to verify safety and efficacy • International co-operation • SME-friendly topics • Personalised medicine • Supporting innovation, bringing products to market

In support of Europe 2020 strategy  conference jointly organised by DG RTD & DG ENTR Innovation in Healthcare, from Research to Market: SMEs in focus 20 and 21 May 2010 Brussels Square-Brussels Meeting Centre Will focus on SMEs operating in the health sector On challenges and drivers affecting their innovative capacity A forum to highlight and discuss policy developments
