  1. Sexually Transmitted Infections(STI’s) Bacterial and Viral

  2. Bacterial STI’s • Can be treated and cured. Examples: • Chlamydia • Syphillus • Gonorrhea

  3. Chlamydia • “Silent” Infection • ¾ women show no symptoms • ½ men show no symptoms Women • Initially effect cervix but can travel to tubes that carry eggs and/or rectum. • Can cause infertility, ectopic pregnacies, higher chance of contracting HIV if exposed. Signs/Symptoms • Abnormal vaginal discharge • Burning sensation while urinating • Lower abdominal pain/back pain • Nausea/Fever • Pain during Intercourse

Chlamydia Men • Can cause arthritis • Skin Lesions Signs/Symptoms • Discharge from penis • Burning during urination • Pain/swelling of testicles • Burning/Itching around opening of penis Treatment for both Men and Women • Antibiotics • Single treatment or 1 week twice daily • Can rid body of bacteria

  5. Syphilis Women can pass this on to babies and cause mental and physical problems. Symptoms for both Males and Females Stage 1: Chancre sores • Will go away Stage 2: Headaches, achiness, loss of appetite • Will go away Stage 3: Fever, bone pain, non healing ulcers, liver disease, heart disease, dementia, paranoia Treatment: • Antibiotics • However, wait till stage three the damage is already done…can’t reverse the damage just stop the spreading.

Gonorrhea Symptoms: • Maybe none at all • Burning during unrination Men: Painful swollen testicles Women: Ectopic Pregnancies, PID • Women can pass to babies causing blindness, joint infections, and life threatening blood diseases. • If goes untreated can lead to infertility • Symptoms are so nondescript that you might not know if you have gonorrhea.

  7. Viral STI’s • Can be treated not cured. Your symptoms may go away but you will always have the virus. Examples: • Genital Warts • Genital Herpes

  8. Genital Warts Stat: Roughly 2 out of 3 people will get genital warts after having any type of genital contact with infected person. Symptoms Women: • Growths (raised or flat) • Grow in vagina or cervix • Both are hard to see Men: • Appear on surface of penis or groin Treatment: • Painful cutting/freezing/burning off of warts. • Can come back (25% of all cases do) • Medicine to help amount of breakouts.

  9. Genital Herpes Signs/Symptoms in both Men and Women • Cluster of small fluid filled blisters that can break and form painful sores that crust and heal. • Look like rash or small bumps • Flu like symptoms Treatment: • Medicine that can reduce the amount of breakouts.
