  1. Biological Approach to treating abnormality Treating Abnormality

  2. Chemotherapy (DRUGS) Antipsychotics • Drugs change and control symptoms of mental illness Eg; Chlorpromazine – Schizophrenia • They block out the neurotransmitters flow of Dopamine by binding it and not stimulating receptor cells.

  3. Atypical antipsychotics • Clozapine only temporarily blocks the receptors which may explain side effects like Tardive Dyskinesia (unwanted movements of the mouth)

  4. Antidepressant Drugs: SSRI’s (Selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors) • They work by blocking the transporter mechanisms that reabsorbs Serotonin into the nerve cell, thus prolonging it’s activity and relieving the symptoms of depression.

  5. Evaluation of Drugs • Strengths Who (2001) reported relapse rates after 1 year with his Schiz patients, when they where treated with placebo’s. Ease of Use it requires little effort or understanding on the part of the user in therapies.

  6. Limitations of Drugs Tackles symptoms rather than cause Drugs only offer a temporary alleviation of symptoms (patients stop taking drugs, symptoms come back) Side Effects All Drugs have side effects this is one of the main reasons drugs treatments fail, as patients stop taking meds.

  7. ECT (Electro convulsive therapy) Ect is used on very depressed patients (drugs don’t work) • How does it work? TASK Task in pairs draw or write your ideas what you think ECT is and why it might potentially benefit a patient.

  8. How does it work? Step by step • Use mussel relaxant and anaesthesia. • A small amount of electrical current, lasting about half a second, is passed through the brain. This current produces a seizure, which affects the whole brain. • Treatment is usually 3-15 treatments (3 per week)

  9. Why does it work? We don’t know 100%… • ECT causes changes in the way the brain works, but there is disagreement about the actually effects that lead to improvement. • ECT affects the Neurotransimtters, original idea based on observations that eplicleptics didn’t seem to be depressive.

  10. Evaluation of ECT Strengths ECT saves lives Comer (2002) 60-70% of patients improved after ECT treatment. Although critics say 84% then relapsed within 6 months of no treatment.

  11. Limitations Sham Studies with real ECT have found that those receiving real ECT were more likely to recover. Shows attention plays a part in recovery Side effects, memory loss, heart problems and headaches, reports have said 30% patients suffer from lots of fear and anxiety after treatment.
