Neutrino Working Group

This initiative aims to strengthen Fermilab's ongoing neutrino program by discussing various budget scenarios, designing a new DUSEL beam, and broadening recruitment efforts. The Long-Term Vision includes developing a DUSEL-FNAL LBL program and pursuing plans for water and LAr technology. The S4 process will help refine the P5 timeline, while addressing detector-related technical and costing issues.

  1. Neutrino Working Group Gina Rameika, FNAL Bob Svoboda, UC Davis

  2. Near Term • There is a strong consensus that Fermilab needs to have a strong, on-going neutrino program. • The NuMI facility can provide beam to MINOS, Minerva, Nova and LAr5 • The BNB can provide beam to MicroBooNE • The community would like to discuss a way to do NOvA in all budget scenarios • NOvA addresses 7/8 neutrino physics goals outlined by P5

  3. Mid-term • We need to design a new DUSEL beam, concurrent with the work on ANU • We need to have a broader recruitment of people who can carry out this project • Existing experience at Fermilab and other Labs (BNL, SLAC?) • Colleagues from the neutrino community • Colleagues from other communities (collider) • This effort needs strong coordination at and by Fermilab • Logistics TBD • Current DUSEL Beam Working Group is a start for discussion, but will not be able to get to a PDR (Project Definition Report) on its own

  4. Long Term Vision • There is great interest in development of a DUSEL-FNAL LBL program • Pursuit of plans for both water and LAr technology likely to be the most productive. Many areas of complimentary physics and sensitivity. • S4 process is a mechanism to develop a broad plan for detector-related technical and costing issues. • Issues and costing exercise needs more resources than available in the S4 phase • This will help to refine the P5 timeline • Current version seems overly optimistic (compressed)
