  4. First grade is a BIG year with reading! We will work very hard on phonics, phonemic awareness, reading strategies, reading comprehension, and sight words. Reading at home is critical in helping students become confident and fluent readers. *Spelling-Pre-test every Monday and post-test every Friday. The words follow the reading series. We will work daily on our writing skills. We will write for many different purposes…to inform, to list, to persuade, to entertain, and to tell a story. We will begin sentences with uppercase letters, use punctuation, add details, and use the word wall to spell common words correctly.

  5. We adopted a new math curriculum this year, Bridges. It is inquiry based and very hands on. We will have Number Corner every day to work on calendar elements, counting, patterns, etc. We will have a hands on lesson, and then practice our skills in work stations. We will use the Colorado State standards for Science. We will cover areas in life science, physical science, and Earth systems.

  6. We will follow the Colorado State Standards for Social Studies. We will cover areas of history, geography, economics and civics, and major holidays and events.

  7. We will use the positive behavior clip chart. Every student begins on “Ready to Learn” each day. Students are able to move up and down the chart throughout the day according to behavior. At the beginning of the year the students will be tracking their progress and coming home with a behavior chart daily (kept in folder). As the year progresses, behavior charts will only be sent home as needed to assist students in reflecting about their choices. The behavior log is a great way to start a conversation with your child about their choices that day!

  8. We don’t have any field trips scheduled as of right now…but we will! A permission slip with go home with your child prior to a field trip. WE LOVE CHAPERONES!

  9. Student folders are a great communication tool! PLEASE check them and clear them out daily and send all notes, transportation changes, forms, or lunch money back in the folder. I check their folders first them in the morning. The behavior chart will stay in their “Return to School” side of their folder for the entire week. • Transportation Changes ~ I know they happen! Please make every effort to notify me in writing if their transportation changes. The kids will remember sometimes…but I certainly don’t depend on them for this. Just jot a note and send it in their daily folder or send an email if something changes during the day. When I get the email, I will respond so you know I received it. If you don’t hear from me, please call the school.

  10. Homework bags will go home every Friday and need to be returned the following Friday. • Reading Log/Book it (20 mins/night) • Spelling Worksheet • Sight Word Practice *I will send home 2 sheets of sight words every month. • Math Home connections (occasionally) • This is a part of your child’s report card. Help students be successful with homework by helping them set up a routine afterschool. • Volunteers-Greatly appreciated and welcomed! • Start mid-end Sept. • Clerical work • One-on-one and small group work with students • Party planning • Assisting with supplies • *Math work places, Homework bags
