  1. Astronautics & Spacecraft Design Activities In Collaboration with NASA Space Grant and ESMD Support Nick Chambers, Graduate Student at MSU Presenting For Dr. Greg Olsen Assistant Professor

  2. Development of Program • Aeronautical Engineering program at Mississippi State University began in 1934 • Designated Aerospace in 1962 • Primarily aeronautics focus • Dual track program instituted in fall 2006 • Aeronautics Concentration • Astronautics Concentration

  3. Astronautics Program • Developed in response to student and industry demand • Course specialization begins in 1st semester of junior year • Orbital Mechanics I & II • Spacecraft Attitude Dynamics • Spacecraft Propulsion • Spacecraft Design I & II • Currently ~ 50% split

  4. Relationship to BalloonSat and Space Cowboys • Both programs offer excellent introduction • Payload Development • Flight Operations • Systems Engineering • Space Environment with BalloonSat • Captures student interest

  5. Spacecraft Design I & II • Offered for first time in fall of 2006 • Eight students • Two projects • Asteroid Rendezvous and Sample Extraction • Polar Express (Lunar Polar Mapping Mission) • supported by ESMD funding • Projects essentially paper studies

  6. ESMD Funding • What did we do with the funding? (~ $6K) • Brought in speaker • Dr. Wally Fowler, University of Texas, Texas Space Grant Consortium • Laboratory supplies to support design class/projects • Reference books for design students

  7. Synergies • MSU currently funded by NASA to develop a small satellite capability for the nation • Partnered with Surrey Satellite Technology, Limited • Tasks • Develop a lunar navigation/communication satellite for launch in 3-4 years • Develop an interdisciplinary graduate program in Satellite Engineering

  8. Synergies • Aerospace Engineering role • Participate in the design task at SSTL • Partner with ECE and IE departments to offer graduate program • Develop curriculum, program of study, etc. • Integrate research activities and knowledge in undergraduate program

  9. Spacecraft Design I & II • Eleven students currently enrolled • First semester • Systems Engineering • Space Mission Analysis and Design • EyasSAT (funded by Small Sat endeavor) • Team Projects

  10. EyasSAT • Developed by Colorado Satellite Services in conjunction with USAFA • Laboratory Satellite ‘Kit’ • Provides hands on experience • Instruction on satellite operation • Fabrication/Assembly • Modules • Structure • Power • Attitude Determination & Control • Integrated Housekeeping • Communication • Data Handling

  11. Spacecraft Design I & II • Project Plans • ESMD Project • Funding will support student/mentor travel and project supplies • RASC-AL • NASA sponsored Revolutionary Aerospace Systems Concepts • Small Satellite/SSTL Project

  12. Satellite Engineering Graduate Program • ASE, ECE IE Team • Provide core course in each discipline • Leads to departmental options • Concentration offered starting January 2008 • Collaboration/Exchange with the University of Surrey • ASE • Astrodynamics • Mission Operations • Payload Development • Propulsion • Space Environments and Effects • Spacecraft Design
