  1. Facial Action Coding System By Sally Vargas

  2. What is the facial coding system? • It is a detailed guide to categorize facial behavior based on their muscular organization. • Tow men named Paul Ekman and W. V. Fiesen develop the original guidelines in 1970. • They did this by determining how the construction of each facial muscle.

  3. Why did I picked this subject?

  4. Who uses facs? • Psychotherapist • Interviewers • Practitioners • These professionals use FACS to have a better understanding of their client because people don’t always express their inner thoughts. People who act/animate need to know facial expressions in order to project the correct emotions in their scenes. • Animators • Actors

  5. Does it work? • In its most basic level FACS does produce results. But to rely on them fully as shown in the LIE TO ME* series is not plausible. In order to put criminals in jail one must rely on solid facts, not on the emotions. FACS can be used as a system to get facts, and are not used as facts.

  6. Is it easy to learn? • I think if I where eager to learn FACS, which I am. It would be easy. But it also depends on how I learned FACS. There are two ways to learning FACS which is a five day class at a particular college or a CD.

  7. Examples of facs • SURPRISE • Jaw Drops • Eyebrows & Eyes lids are closed • Lips Pulled Back • SADNESS • Raised Inner Brow • Sagging Outer Lip

  8. Examples of facs • CONTEMPT • Occurs on One Side of the Face • Pulling Upper Lip Up and Away • FEAR • Eyebrows Raised • Mouth Slightly Open • Lips Stretched Back in a Horizontal Position
