  1. “Effective Effort” 101 What is responsible for our successes and failures? Adapted from Saphier, Haley-Speca, Gower

  2. Reflect on your beliefs: • What makes someone a good student? What qualities, traits, characteristics, or behaviors do they display? Can this be learned or does it have to come naturally? Explain. • Write a complete paragraph, 5-7 sentences. • Pair and share.

  3. Life-Limiting Beliefs • Mistakes are a sign of weakness • Speed is what counts. Faster is smarter. • Good students can do it by themselves. Competition is necessary to bring out the best in students. • Inborn intelligence is the main determinant of success. • Only the few bright can achieve at a high level.

  4. Life-Liberating Beliefs • Mistakes help one learn. • You are not supposed to understand everything the first time around. Care, perseverance, and craftsmanship are what count. • Good students work together with others and solicit help and lots of feedback on their work. • Consistent effort and effective strategies are the main determinants of success. • Everyone, not just the fastest and most competent, is capable of high achievement.

  5. What does “Effective Effort” require? • Time • Focus • Strategies • Resourcefulness • Use of Feedback • Commitment

  6. 1. Time: • How much time will it take to do the job well? Am I putting in enough hours and minutes?

  7. 2. Focus • One thing at a time! • Concentration • Eliminating distractions

  8. 3. Strategies • What strategies am I using or could I use? • Do I have alternatives when one strategy isn’t working?

  9. 4. Resourcefulness • Do I know where to go for help?

  10. 5. Use of Feedback • Do I get feedback on how I am doing? • Do I use feedback to improve my performance?

  11. 6. Commitment • Do I stick with things, even when they get difficult?

  12. An “Effective Effort” Checklist:

  13. In closing: • Describe a time when “Effective Effort” would have helped you to be successful. What would you have done differently?
